User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:74.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/74.0

Steps to reproduce:

Updated to 74 beta 1

Actual results:

Drop down menu on address bar with recent sites no longer appears. No down arrow on address bar

Expected results:

There should be a down arrow on address bar to see recent sites or common sites visited

Also usually when you click on the address bar, usually your most visited sites are in a drop down, but nothing happens when you click in the address bar

I get a list of sites when clicking the address bar. The lack of dropdown arrow is probably intentional; I recall some discussions around removing it.

I don't get anything when clicking the address bar, except the address bar kind of pops out for some reason. Added a screenshot of it.

This issue also occurs in Arch Linux firefox-developer-edition.

This is the expected behavior and is part of the urlbar design update coming in a future release.

There are two parts of the design discussed in this bug.

The first part is called openViewOnFocus and means that when the urlbar is focused, its view/popup automatically opens. The dropdown arrow therefore isn't necessary anymore. Bug 1603778 and other bugs have more info.

The second part is part of the design called megabar. Please see bug 1561531 for more info.

How come it doesn't show my history when I click the address bar anymore? That's a horrible change!

It shows your top sites, the ones that appear on the new-tab page.

It no longer shows those when I click the bar Drew.

You can see it in comment 3 above where I have the bar highlighted in the picture. No top sites appear.

Ok, I found the issue Drew. I had FireFox home content disabled in options so I could have a blank page. Unfortunately there is a bug in Firefox 74 where if this is disabled, it doesn't show your top sites when clicking the url bar. Hopefully this can be fixed as I don't like my sites appearing when I open a new tab.

I see, thanks for explaining. We intentionally do not show your top sites in the urlbar if you've disabled top sites on your new-tab page. What I don't know is whether hiding the dropdown arrow in that case is intentional. To work around it in the meantime, you can press the down arrow key while the urlbar is focused.

Dão, do you know?

Yeah, this is intentional. Another workaround would be to collapse top sites on the new tab page rather than removing them. Admittedly this isn't very intuitive, so we may want to rethink the heuristics here...

Out of curiosity Dão and Drew, why did hiding top sites on the home page still show them when I clicked the address bar previously to 74? It didn't stop until the 74 beta installed.

If you used a non-Nightly version of 73, it still showed the dropdown arrow that you could click to open the view and show your top sites. (Although those top sites are slightly different from the ones we show now and on the new-tab page.) We're developing a new urlbar design that's currently enabled on Nightly and early Betas (like the current 74 Betas) and will be enabled on Release later.

Ok, I gotta say I'm not really enjoying the new bar so far. Curious how feedback is going for it so far. Hopefully it changes back to the old style.

I think making address bar pop smaller by 2 or 3 pixels on each side would make it less look like bug.
