User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:74.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/74.0

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Make sure that browser.urlbar.update1 is set to true

  2. Enable bookmarks toolbar

  3. Open a new tab

Actual results:

The addressbar is focused when opening a new tab (which is of course expected), however, the new highlight effect is quite large, to the point where it covers part of the bookmarks toolbar below it.

This reduces the amount of clickable space on the bookmarks toolbar, especially if using the compact layout.

See the attached screenshot for an example

Expected results:

The highlight effect should not cover the bookmarks toolbar

Summary: New addressbar highlight effect obscures bookmarks toolbar → New addressbar focus effect obscures bookmarks toolbar
Component: Untriaged → Address Bar

As an example of a tweak that might make this better, look at what google chrome does.

Chrome has a similar 'floating' focus effect when typing in the addressbar:

However, when you initially open a new tab, it has a more subtle focus effect that does not obscure the bookmarks toolbar:

Hi, the effect is wanted, we already evaluated a lot of users feedback about the bookmarks toolbar coverage, and the current implementation is the resulting compromise to keep the best of the two worlds.
We do want to expand the urlbar field (so what Chrome does is not enough), and we don't want to break the toolbar functionality. The current coverage doesn't prevent the toolbar from being used.

a lot of users feedback about

Could you quantify that? Was it more like ten people or more like a thousand? And was the question just about toolbar coverage or also about the highlight effect itself? Because purely anecdotally there a lot of users who think this effect looks off.

It's also not consistent with the highlight effect for the search bar which makes it look even more broken. Is there a plan to change that?

Thanks for answering my questions!

compromise to keep the best of the two worlds

I understand one world is people that use bookmarks bar, but what is the other one?

Are there enough people complain about location bar being too small when typing?

Does anyone have a workaround for disabling this "wanted" feature? I find partly obscuring the bookmarks toolbar very annoying.
