Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:73.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/73.0

Steps to reproduce:

In about:config, I set app.update.auto==false

Actual results:

Firefox enters auto update mode, and refuses to keep working without a restart.

Expected results:

Firefox should have prompted me to update, but should not have stopped working if I did not update.

I am through with firefox. Chrome is downloading now.

Bugbug thinks this bug should belong to this component, but please revert this change in case of error.

Component: Untriaged → Application Update
Product: Firefox → Toolkit

The app.update.auto pref was intentionally disabled some time ago in bug 1458308, for the reasons explained there. But, if you click the button labeled "Check for updates but let you choose to install them" in the Options tab (about:preferences), that should work. Can you try that and let us know how it goes? Thanks.
