161673 - memory usage during startup out of control

Hello,

I'm using a nightly (build 2002060721) on Linux (Debian unstable/testing).

When I click on the mail icon in my browser window to start the mail and
news component, the machine becomes unusable for about 2-3 minutes due
to excessive memory (and subsequently swap) usage. During this startup
peak the reported memory usage (from 'top') climbs up to a whopping 260 MB,
and - of course - my drive lamp burns continuously. After the component
has properly started, memory usage drops to "normal", presently to around
30MB.

I suspect that smaller machines - mine has 256 MB RAM and a gig of swap
already - will just crash when running out of swap.
