Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:73.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/73.0

Steps to reproduce:

Thunderbird 68.4.1 with Lightning 68.4.1 on Ubuntu 18.0.4

1 - Nextcloud agenda using Nextcloud account with user toto@toto.com
2 - Thunderbird syncing using CaldDAV with (1) Thunderbird email profile foobar@foobar.com (2) option "Prefer client-side email scheduling" checked
3 - Create a new event and configure list of attendees

Actual results:

Default attendee (sender) is foobar@foobar.com

Expected results:

Default attendee (sender) is foobar@foobar.com

Remark:
It looks like like it just take the user email from Nextcloud whatever Thunderbird profile is configured.

I think you made a typo (actual result should read toto@toto.com), and if I am right, I have a similar issue.

I would expect that the "email address" in the calendar properties sets the sender. It is the case for offline calendars, but not for CalDAV-synchronised ones, which will always have the CalDAV user as the sender.

At least, if what I would expect is not possible, I think the possibility of setting the email address should be greyed/disabled in a the properties of a calendar synchronised with CalDAV. But I see no reason why it should not be possible since KMail does it.

Bottom line: there should be a (possible) difference between the user (email address) of the CalDAV calendar and the sender that replies to an invitation. Expected behaviour (I say it with my own words since I am not perfectly sure it is the same issue, but it probably means the same thing as in the original post):

  • foobar@foobar.com (my email account) receives the invite event X.
  • I click "Accept" and select a CalDAV calendar belonging to toto@toto.com (my CalDAV account); Lightning automatically sets an event X in my Toto calendar.
  • The organiser receives a response saying "Foobar will attend".
