In bug 1620536 we want to add "Import from Another Browser..." to the Help menu, but it's already in the File menu. While duplication is not a problem per se, the File menu doesn't seem like a great location for this to start with, so I think we should consider removing the item from there.

I disagree since that is the common location for Import menu items in other software and note that users do use it multiple times as a one-way sync option because we don't have bug 737804.

The following applications all have/had Import in the File menu

  • Safari
  • Internet Explorer
  • Outlook
  • iMovie
  • Preview.app
  • Audacity
  • VirtualBox
  • Keychain Acess

There is no other more consistent place for it. Placing it in the File menu was based on common patterns in other applications… placing it in the Help menu was not AFAICT.

Also note that this is already the number 1 way the import wizard is opened on macOS (by a long shot: 63%) in Firefox 73 and the number 2 way on Linux (33% of the time). Even with the menu bar hidden by default the wizard was opened from there 18% of the time.

Thanks, that's solid data, so let's close this for now. If somebody has a good reason to reconsider this, please chime in.
