Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/80.0.3987.132 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce:

  1. setup a new imap/smtp email account by using the ACE string of the domain
  2. open account settings - select account
  3. 'email address field' enter the IDN email
  4. create new email and send a test mail anywhere

Actual results:

Alert msg pops up:
Syntax error, command unrecognized

full alert msg:

Expected results:

successful sent

This should be fixed as nobody wants recipients to receive mails from the ACE address "info@xn--blabla-xy.app".

It does work from the mailer provider web client (1&1) and send via java mail.

Hi Wenzel, thank you for reporting this. Unfortunately, Thunderbird doesn't support IDNs very well yet, there's a number of related bugs.
This looks like duplicate of bug 923043.
