Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:74.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/74.0

Steps to reproduce:

I signed into the United States Postal Service's web site successfully using my user name and password. I then clicked on Informed Delivery and received an error message. I then used Microsoft Edge to log into the Post Office web site and clicked on Informed Delivery with no problems and no error messages. I tried to use Informed Delivery five times with Firefox 74.0 and received the error message four out of five times. I have all the latest Java updates, Adobe Flash updates, and Windows10 (64 bit) updates. I also have a fairly new computer with 16gb of memory.

Actual results:

Error message I received is as follows -

Error 500: javax.servlet.ServletException: java.lang.OutOfMemoryError

Expected results:

I should have been able to access Informed Delivery to see what mail was being delivered to my house today.

Bugbug thinks this bug should belong to this component, but please revert this change in case of error.

I'm pretty confident this error is an error on the server when processing requests. That it happens with Firefox and not Microsoft Edge leads me to think this is a coding error in their server code or perhaps their client side code which causes an out of memory error on the server. I'm going to move this to Web Compatibility:Desktop but will flag myself to attempt this myself.

Bill0573: On an unrelated note, unless you need them specifically, I would definitely consider disabling or removing any Java plugin or Flash plugin. Flash is going to be discontinued this year if it hasn't already and Java is rarely used any more and is more likely to be a vector through which someone will attack you.

Bill, could you provide the URL you used to log in please?

Flags: needinfo?(Bill0573)

You need to create an account and verify your address: https://informeddelivery.usps.com/box/pages/intro/start.action

URL = user name and password? or ???

Flags: needinfo?(Bill0573)

I'm sorry, no, none of that. The web address, but Bob has provided it.

Fwiw, I had an issue creating my account last evening. It failed without a real message and left the account in a partially created state where I couldn't log in and couldn't reset it but couldn't create an account with the same user name. I ended up creating a different account this morning. My mobile phone is under my wife's name so I didn't do the mobile phone verification and I have to wait for the code in the snail mail. I'll test this when I can.

I was able to successfully login, validate an account and access informed delivery using Firefox 77 Nightly on Linux. I presume that this was either a temporary error with the usps web application or perhaps is a Windows only issue.

Bill: Are you able to access the site now?

Flags: needinfo?(Bill0573)

Yes I can.

Thanks! I'll mark this works for me.
