A thread is always open when I go into folder

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:74.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/74.0
Steps to reproduce:
This behavior has been going on for years.
I apply the "threads" view to one of my folders, so every time I look at it, the discussion-threads are collapsed and I can see what-all threads are going on.
Note that I sort the threads by descending date, so the latest thread is at the top and the earlier threads appear below.
Actual results:
Almost always, there is one thread that's un-collapsed, so that's all I see.
Expected results:
All the threads should be collapsed.

Here's what I think is happening:
I may have read one message that's the only one in it's thread, so Thunderbird has a record that thread #X was left in an open state (while the others are left closed).
When I re-open the folder later, and new messages have been loaded, the threads get re-numbered so some other thread (corresponding to #X) is assumed to have been left in the open state so Thunderbird un-collapses it.

This seems to happen whether the threads are ordered bottom-to-top or top-to-bottom.
I'm thinking it's also possible that a thread gets opened if it contains a new message.

I'm running Ubuntu 18.04. Is there a way to update the Thunderbird in-place, with apt-get?

It is certainly available by now.

78.14.0 still has the problem.

Version 78 is not current. Does it happen on version 91?

You'd asked about 78 version before, which is the one that Ubuntu automatically updated to.
I won't be able to answer re: 91 for awhile, and by then the latest version will be something else.

I just upgraded my laptop to Ubuntu 22.04 and am running Thunderbird 91.10.0 (64-bit).
I do see the same behavior -- some fairly-recent thread is expanded while the others are all closed.

I still have the problem with Thunderbird 102.14.0 (64-bit).
Next year I'll update to Ubuntu 24.04 with a newer version.
I can't really test new versions on-the-fly, I don't want to mess up my mail.

But seriously, can you try it yourself?
- Open a folder.
- Sort the messages by descending order of date, i,e, newest at the top.
- Click on the icon to collapse all the threads together.
Some time when you come back to the folder, you'll see that one of the threads is un-collapsed.
