oops, this is a Chimera bug. sorry

Will, your items 1 and 2 WorkForMe using Chimera/2002081605 on
[http://www.mozilla.org/]. I don't understand what your item 3 means.
On Chimera/2002081605, I'm not getting a hand cursor nor any change in the
status bar when I mouse over a bookmark in my Bookmarks Toolbar. (Mozilla does
give a hand cursor, and additionally underlines the bookmark.)

I'm not sure they should though, as we're basically trying to emulate the main
toolbar. There the mouse is expected to remain an arrow and tool tips are used
to provide further information. I wouldn't expect a hand cursor and status bar
update when I mouse over the "Back" or "Reload" toolbar icons.

I would go for #3 though. It would be very convenient if I were able hold down
the command key and click a link in my Bookmarks Toolbar to open that bookmark
in a new tab. Currently to open a bookmark in a new tab requires: creating a new
tab, switching to the tab, and clicking on a bookmark.
Ah ha, using Chimera/2002081605, I now see that the mouse cursor and status text
don't change on mouseover on a Personal Toolbar bookmark, when the window is
blank. Will, Ben, is that what you're experiencing, as well?
Build Chimera 2002081605

Chimera behaviour:
Mouseover an icon on the personal toolbar doesn't give ANY visual feedback,
whether the page is blank or not. After a delay, tooltip of link ONLY pops up.

Mozilla behaviour:
Mouseover folder: cursor does not change, but folder icon embosses
Mouseover bookmark: link underlines, cursor changes to hand, after delay,
tooltip of title and link pops up.

#3 (comand-click) is covered for Mozilla in bug 59132, does it need an extra bug
report against Chimera?
The URL should not be in the tooltip as tooltips should be brief (!)
descriptions of some sort of object, and we all know that URL can be very long.
At most, a shortened (through dots) version of the URL could be in the tooltip.
The tooltip should show the description as entered in the bookmark properties,
plus the keyword, if available.
I think being able to command-click on a toolbar bookmark to get it in a new
window/tab is a valid enhancement. I agree with Ben's comment 2 about how
underlining/changing color/embossing things in the toolbar is not appropiate in
Cocoa, and showing the URL in the status bar is the same kind of problem with
making a UI element act like HTML, although I don't feel so strongly about that
one (I do feel strongly about not underlining/coloring/embossing active toolbar
items; that is going to make Chim feel like Netscape Communicator).

Re: comment 6 I think the devs would need to decide whether Chimera is going to
wait for the Moz bug to be resolved, so I would recommend that this either get
duped to bug 59132 or confiremed as an enhancement to be able to cmd-click
toolbar bookmarks.
It seems to me like nearly no-one wants the personal toolbar items to act like
links, as it looks "wrong" in Aqua/Cocoa. I agree.

Therefore, I'm turning this bug into a "Enable middle-click on personal toolbar
bookmarks for loading them in a new tab" bug. If Mozilla bug 59132 fixes, make
this a dupe of it, as suggested in comment 1.
Status: UNCONFIRMED → NEW
Ever confirmed: true
Summary: Personal Toolbar bookmarks should act like links → Enable middle-click on personal toolbar bookmarks for loading them in a new tab
The newer bug has more discussion about the feature, so duping to that.
