User Story
Error reported is given as; There are non-ASCII characters in the local part of the recipient address . This is not yet supported. Please change this address and try again.
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:75.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/75.0
Steps to reproduce:
I have been using a Maiing List for many weeks but a fortnight ago this sort of error message appeared - 'There are non-ASCII characters in the local part of the recipient address . This is not yet supported. Please change this address and try again.'
- The whole list searched for non-ASCII characters - non found
- The whole mailing list rebuilt - problem still persists
- Mailing list addresses printed off and every address searched for non-ASCII characters - none found.
- The text for the same e-mail to circulate was put into a new Write message & 20 email addresses put into the 'To' box - E-mail sent without any problem.
- (4) above repeated with 50 and more names in the 'To' box. All the email addresses were cut and pasted from the Mailing List which was giving trouble - e-mail sent without problem.
- Checked with the Forum to see if other people had the problem - Yes many had the identical problem and deduce that a bug has entered the program since the last update
Expected results:
Mailing lists should despatch without problem as they did a few weeks ago.
Is Bugzilla aware of the problem and taking steps to fix it?
I am using version 68.7.0 (32 bit) with Windows 10. Other programs I use are 64 bit. So is there a 64 bit version of Thunderbird?
I notice that Thunderbird Website says requirements are Windows 7 .... but no mention of Windows 10. Should Windows 10 be included in your list please?

Are you referring to spaces in the name of a mailing list in the Thunderbird address book?
Many people on Forum now reporting this.
A url?

Ah, a list of addresses from a spreadsheet or something.
We'd need an actual example of data that causes the issue - that is, if the problem isn't caused by an addon you using.
No idea what "rebuilt" means.

I am not referring to spaces in name of a mailing list.
After compiling the message and then press 'Send' the error message 'there are non ASCII characters ....' comes up.
Have found the Win 10 requirement now. thanks

The list of addresses were typed in manually. i.e. not cut and pasted from a spreadsheet.
What do you mean by an 'actual example'? Do you want a screen drop of the error message, of the names in the address list or something else?
The only addon I might be aware of is a spell checker.
For 'rebuilt' I mean I re-entered all the e-mail addresses again into the mailing list.

Actual example means the exact text you typed into the recipient field - something people other than you can use to reproduce the problem on their own machine. Your description of what you typed is not the actual data.

I have modified the bug, as the only instance of this I am aware of it the linked support topic where 3 people are reported to have the same problem, although probably twice that number are posting what amount to me to responses.

Bug 1658361 could potentially have fixed this.

Reporter,
This may have been fixed by 78.2.0 in late August. Do you agree?

I would need to build up a new address list and see whether the bug is fixed.
6 months ago I split up the 200 entries on the list that did not work into 3 parts & constructed new lists from these. I now send the message to each of these 3 separately and it works. This has been done about 25 times.
