(Keywords: regressionwindow-wanted, Whiteboard: [passwords:master-password][passwords:primary-password])
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.13; rv:76.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/76.0
Steps to reproduce:
- Opened Firefox (starts with one tab opens to Firefox home, with web search, top sites, recommended by pocket, highlights and snippets displayed)
- Entered Master Password into the pop-up box
Notes
I did not us a lockwise add-on as Lockwise is built in.
Actual results:
- Pop-up box accepted password
- Another master password dialogue box opens (which you can dismiss, as it accepts the first password)
Expected results:
- Enter password in master password box
- dialogue box should accept password and not pop up a second dialogue box

The second dialogue box appears also appears while if you take to long to input your password, it will force part of the password into the second master password dialogue box
The issue does not seem to happen in safe mode.
The active extensions are:
Adobe Acrobat
Facebook Container
uBlock Origin

Thanks for filing!
Did the problem only start with Firefox 76? There was a related issue which should be fixed in Fx76 (bug 1608347).
Do you use Firefox Sync? Does the problem happen in Firefox Safe Mode?

Hi Matthew,
I initially posted it in the other bug report but was told that was fixed so to make report a new bug. This is in Firefox 76/latest public release and does not seem to happen in safe mode.
I have minimal extensions as seen above.
This issue was never fixed on my end and has been happening for quite some time.
As I mentioned above, I am running an older machine, Mac book pro mid 2010 so not sure if that is causing any issues.

Since it doesn't happen in safe mode it's likely caused by one of your extensions. Can you try disabling extensions one-by-one until the problem goes away and let us know which extension caused it?

Hi Matthew,
I disabled the only two remaining extensions, Facebook Container and uBlock Origin, and the same thing is still happening.
I also noticed that if I am too slow to put in my master password, the dialogue box will reappear and can cut off password, put part in new box.
Then when enter password, 2nd dialoge box still pops up.

I was bumping into Bug 1656903 but had no luck reproducing this specific scenario.
Hey BugZillian, are you still encountering this?

Yes, it happens everyday, but I am running a MacBook Pro, mid 2010, which doesn’t support the latest Mac OS X, so maybe the issue is just on my end. (10 year old laptop works wonders, 500 GB SSD+16 GB memory 😊)

Can you please update tomorrow to the latest Firefox Release 80 and see if this is still reproducible? There is a bug fix introduced recently and I wonder if it also solves this case. Please let me know once you update and check it out.
Thank you!

I updated to 80 and the same thing happened. Like I mentioned, it may be my fault because I am running a 2010 MacBook Pro with High Sierra (because it can not upgrade to the newest OS)
The behavior is interesting though because if you wait to type in a password, you can actually see the master password box pop-up, then re-pop up, then if you type it in, it pops up again, you can dismiss it, because it successfully recognizes that you are logged in though.

Even if you are running on older MacBook it still should work fine. One more thing, can you please log out of Sync, restart the browser and check it out? Sorry for going back and forth with this, but we need more info to try to understand what is the cause since we had a couple of cases like this fixed recently but there is still something out there in the wild :)
If by any chance you have the time to do a screen recording, please also share it here.

Got it, here is a link to the video, showing that if you just wait on the master password screen, the pop-up box actually replaces itself (appears a 2nd time without user interaction)
Then after I put in the password (slight delay in video) right after I input it, the master password dialogue box pops back up, which can be safety dismissed because it accepts the password.
Let me know if there are any issues with the video link:

Looks bad, I have saved the video locally, free to delete it..just gave it a shot with Sync too but couldn't repro. One more thing that could help is a debug log. Here is a tutorial on how to do that, when you have the time, please look into it and attach here de log: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1P94qZvQc3FkLiwhrmEYTSweCGt09ef97/preview

Thanks, I'll try to do that, do these logs leak any private username/password information?

No, your credentials are totally safe and not shared within the logs. You can read more about it here: https://wiki.mozilla.org/Toolkit:Password_Manager/Debugging

The bug has a release status flag that shows some version of Firefox is affected, thus it will be considered confirmed.
