Steps to reproduce:

Enter an Signature to your Account.
DON'T add two hyphens (--) in Front of your Signature.

Create an NEW EMAIL, look at the Signature
Answer an Email, look at the Signature

MY Enviroment:
Name Thunderbird
Version 68.8.0
Build-ID 20200509131214
User-Agent Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:68.0) Gecko/20100101 Thunderbird/68.8.0
OS: Linux 4.14.178-1-MANJARO

Actual results:

For a new Mail, the double hyphens are inserted automatically.
As this is needed to make Email-Clients able to recognize that a footer start after the double-hyphen, it's the correct bahvior.

If you answer an Email, the double hyphen is missed.
That's the wrong behavior

Expected results:

Double Hyphen should ever appear in front of the Signature.

Not sure what you're suggesting.

Anyway, it is "-- \n"
It's not there when replying on top, because then all things below would be part of the signature.
