A plethora of basic things that go wrong when writing an e-mail

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:77.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/77.0
Steps to reproduce:
I wrote an e-mail that contained: an ordinal numerical phrase (for instance, '2nd'); an apostrophe (in text pasted from a webpage) ; I tried to edit the e-mail in various ways
Actual results:
-
The caret disappeared. (I know there is a bug report for this. For, I filed it. Yet, I cannot find it with your search system.)
-
The ordinal was flagged wrongly - by one of the two spell checks, namely the one that can be scheduled to run before sending - as a mistake. (Again: I know there is a bug report for this. For, I filed it. Yet, I cannot find it with your search system.)
-
The apostrophe was wrongly flagged as a spelling error (by at least one of the two spell checkers).
-
When I tried to paste text into the e-mail, it appeared somewhere other than the caret - see: #483583; #286284; and I think there is at least one more report).
Expected results:
- The caret should not disappear.
- No spell-checker should misflag ordinals.
- No correct apostrophe should be misflagged by any spell-checker.
- Pasting should work as intended.
Thunderbird maintainers: do you deny that 1-4, at least in concert, represent gross deviation from what an e-mail client should be? I am being rather pushy. I take this as my justification: if no one pushes, this basic multifarious brokenness will continue.
To expand a little (but polemically): do you not think people should be able to use your e-mail program to write, successfully, reasonably sophisticated e-mails, and without undue hassle?
There are at least two further bugs that impede the above process that I am not even mentioning.
Most - perhaps all - of the bugs I have mentioned have existed for years.

Pleas use bug before bug numbers to create links.

For longstanding issues, it would be best to refer to existing bug reports like these https://mzl.la/34s6H5o
At present, it would help most to file bugs that are new in version 78, rather than old bug reports. Only one issue per bug please.
