1643923 - No response when clicking on a folder of bookmarks

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.15; rv:76.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/76.0

Steps to reproduce:

Create a folder of bookmarks. Access, or attempt to access, this folder of bookmarks from the toolbar; attempt to add bookmark to this folder of bookmarks. Note: this is completely random, not specific to one single folder, or set of bookmarks. When one folder is affected, other folders may still work. May, but due to inconsistency, it's hard to replicate to a specific folder.

Actual results:

Bookmark folder is visible, and you can click on it with a visible response (it toggles from a light gray to a dark gray and vice versa, for each click); however, the folder will not open, will not show the list of bookmarks within, nor will it allow you to add a bookmark to that folder.

Expected results:

The folder should open when clicked on, show the list of bookmarks within. Also, if adding a bookmark, the folder should expand open to allow addition of new bookmark.

Just as an FYI, this has happened for several months through several version of Firefox (I kept waiting for it to get fixed with each patch), most recently experienced on a MAC, OSX 10.15.4 running Firefox in both Private and Regular browsing mode.

Also, was able to force-duplicate this by opening a new Window (not Private Window), move this Window to a new Desktop space (I use multiple Desktop spaces on my Mac), and it immediately broke the bookmark folder(s) - several of them but not all. New Window on assigned desktop still had working folders.

Do you have any firm steps to reproduce the issue consistently? Unfortunately without specific steps, it is going to be hard for us to reproduce and fix this.

When it happens, please check if you see any errors sent to the Browser Console.
Then, if you can find more reliable steps to reproduce the bug, they'd be extremely useful for us to debug it.
If then we figure out this is only reproducible easily on your system, you could try with mozRegression https://mozilla.github.io/mozregression/

Hi Mark and Marco (all the Marks) - I have been able to reliably duplicate the issue as detailed below. First, a bit of background: I am using the latest version of Firefox but have noticed this for several versions / releases. I've noticed this most often with my Mac Mini, but it has also happened on my MacBook Pro, which I will test later and update this thread accordingly. For now, this is on the Mac Mini, 10.15.5 with FF 77.0.1

I have my OS set to use multiple Desktops (aka Spaces: https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/work-in-multiple-spaces-mh14112/mac), currently 6 total. I also have FF set to open on a particular desktop/space, although this doesn't seem to matter. If I open FF, open a few tabs, open a few bookmarks, everything is beautiful. If I open a new window and drag it to a different desktop/space, then I can click on any bookmark folder only once before it stops working within that particular space. The original window I opened on the space FF is set to open in continues to work fine. This will also happen if I create a new TAB and drag that to a new desktop/space.

So, the common denominator here is opening FF in one space, creating a new window or tab and dragging that new window or tab to a new space, which results in killing access to the bookmark folders. They remain visible, but they stop working after being clicked on once.

Hope that helps, and I'll let you know if it happens on my other two MacBook Pro's and a MacBook Air.

I just tried reproducing following the steps in coment 6 with Firefox Nightly on 10.15, but I couldn't. This is what I did:

1. opened Firefox
2. opened multiple (3) spaces
3. dragged Firefox to the second space, by dragging it against the right border and waiting a couple seconds
4. verified that the toolbar works
5. opened a new Firefox window with CMD+N
6. dragged the new window to the third space, same way as at point 3
7. verified that the toolbar works

Did I miss any steps? There may be something else involved, maybe some system settings or add-ons?

I repeat the question from comment 5, when the problem happens, do you see any Errors reported to the Browser Console?
