Well, I've installed Mozilla versions 1.0, 1.0.1 RC1 and 1.1 Beta and got the
same result on all three: back button doesn't work. I've tried changing skins
(you never know), without any positive result.

I've got a simple XP installation, nothing fancy.

It's too bad, Mozilla work's just fine at work, but without a back button, I
pretty much can't use it at home.

Is the back button disabled, or is it enabled but clicking on it won't do anything?

Starting with some of the August builds, a problem with the
components\compreg.dat file has caused problems. This may not be the problem
you're experiencing, but you may want to give it a try.

All you need to do is delete that file. As I said, this may not be the problem
you are experiencing, though if it is, that's bug 162593.
See also bug #126826 as reference.
The back button is disabled at all times. Wether I visit one or twenty pages doesn't make a difference, it never becomes enabled.

I took a look at bug 162593 as suggested, but this doesn't seem to be my problem... or is it? I have no components\compreg.dat file.
It is impossible to run mozilla and not have compreg.dat file. ;)
Would you please do a search for that file on your hard drive? Delete it when found.
I don't know what to say. I promise you I DO know what I'm doing, but there's no compreg.dat file ANYWHERE.

XP's installed on the C: drive and Mozilla (with all other apps) are on my E: drive (D:'s a swap). I searched both for the compreg.dat file (just in case) it's not there...

What's compreg.dat's use? Would it be theoreticly possible to run mozilla (in a bugy state) without it?
Bug 161736 comment 2 makes me sure that your problem is compreg.dat file.
Please open Mozilla, click your back button once, then go to Tools -> Web
Development -> JavaScript Console and see if you've got any error messages there.
If yes, copy and paste them to this bug, and then contact me directly by email,
so we can search for your compreg.dat together.
