Expected results:

Chrome 83 has no problems with that page; Firefox has never had problems with it in the past (based on my browsing history I think I last visited the page on 3/28/2020). Now I have to disable hardware acceleration to avoid a BSOD.

I've tested a few old versions from PortableApps:

38.0.5 "fine" (b/c of js error)
43.0.4 "fine" (b/c of js error)

76.0.1 broken

In versions up to 47.0.1 the window turns blank after a little and the console shows js errors. All other versions cause crash (for anybody testing this: in many cases, though not all, you can avoid the BSOD by closing the FF window very quickly as soon as screen decomposing begins).

A few thoughts.

  • The crash is not instant: in particular, in 52.0.2 it happened after scrolling up and down a little. Probably it's the JS that does something after loading and causes the crash.
  • This bug is very old. Surely I've visited the page before without problems. So, I think it's some change Paypal has done over the last few weeks/months that triggers it.

I can do further testing if necessary, but possibly to targeted FF versions, because it's a PITA to have a system crash for each and every release I test.

I am plagued by "too many requests" errors on archive.org

The crash does not happen as late as https://web.archive.org/web/20200603001425/https://www.paypal.com/it/home (June 3); the page looks visually different, so they did change something after.

However, I could not test any later snapshot, so I am not sure that the crash does not happen because of how pages are saved on archive.org

AFAIK yes, I have the latest. The hardware is quite old (a Toshiba Satellite notebook from ~ 2009). Looking around, I could only find a slightly older driver (mine is 8.970.100.1100 of 4-29-2013, I've seen 8.970.100.700 of 1-16-2013). If I manage to try it I'll let you know.

I remember the gfx card used to be blacklisted by Mozilla several years ago (I couldn't enable HWA). Then it was unblacklisted, and since then no problems until this very isolated issue.

As I said, Chrome (and Chromium Edge) plays the video OK (with enabled HWA and hardware video decoding).

In case this may help, I found that my card is actually blacklisted by Chrome. If I force #ignore-gpu-blacklist from chrome://flags, the Graphics Features Status from chrome://gpu changes like this:

Out-of-process Rasterization: Unavailable => Disabled
Hardware Protected Video Decode: Unavailable => Hardware accelerated
Rasterization: Unavailable => Hardware accelerated
Video Decode: Unavailable => Hardware accelerated

However, even with these different settings the paypal video does not BSOD in Chrome
