Steps to reproduce:

I'm having several tabs open. At some point the page freezes and nothing helps except force quit. The beach ball only appears when hovering over Firefox. I've had this only with Facebook and Reddit pages so far. I've restarted to make sure it was not a system problem, but it happened right away. I've quit Firefox several times. At first I had about 15 tabs open, later I closed about 10, and that made it better. It took longer to get the problem.

Just another one, took about five minutes of waiting.

Activity Monitor says: Firefox not responding, 100% CPU, about 500MB memory.

Macos 10.15, Firefox 77.0.1

Actual results:

Beach ball, Firefox is unresponsive. One time it took a real long time, and then one tab closed, after which Firefox became responsive again.

Expected results:

I'm doing the usual browsing, having multiple tabs open. Nothing I'm doing now is out of the ordinary.

  • I've cleared all cookies, the cache, all website content. No change.
  • Disabling addons didn't make a change.

I created a new profile in Firefox and haven't had the problem since then. I still don't know what caused it.

I'm having this same behavior suddenly after months of no problems. Firefox 88.0.1 on MacOS 10.14.6. I refreshed Firefox but anytime I switch to another app for more than a couple of minutes, Firefox gets stuck with beach ball and 100% cpu and must be force quit. It does this consistently sometimes even with zero tabs open. Here is a profile link:
