Works for me. Which Firefox version, Linux distribution/version and desktop environment do you have?

(In reply to Jan Andre Ikenmeyer [:darkspirit] from comment #2)

Works for me. Which Firefox version, Linux distribution/version and desktop environment do you have?

Ubuntu 18.04
Mozilla Firefox 77.0.1 (snap)

Fails with Firefox 76.x.x(snap)
Works with firefox 68.9.0 esr/stable

The snap may be the factor here. Can you use plain (not snap) Firefox version?

Even the Firefox 68.9.0 version that I used is snap. Snap has become the commonly used version on Ubuntu for the last year or more. If you want me to try the non snap version, let me know.

Yes please, try the non swap version.

77.0.1 non snap version works fine.

Summary: File open dialog from button in browsed page fails → [Snap] File open dialog from button in browsed page fails

Please report that at Ubuntu bugzilla (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/) as it's Ubuntu specific bug.
Thanks.

I don't think this is Ubuntu specific as I see the same problem with the snap package on Debian Buster (FF 78.0.2). The OP didn't say what WM they were using. I'm running i3 if that is likely to make a difference?

Same bug with latest snap version on Debian Stretch. Had to install it from binaries
