User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:77.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/77.0

Steps to reproduce:

I call up any page, preferably YouTube, but also other pages where there are no videos or mp3. And suddenly the Tab crashes, I select the option Restore Tab and it crashes again. Even if I close the tab, the browser closes completely the same phenomenon. All other URLs work, the one that crashed always crashes again.

Constant tab crashes. After such a crash, all other URLs will work, but the crashed address will always cause a crash. The only way to change this is to uninstall Firefox and then reinstall it. System: Intel Corporation HD Graphics 530,System: Firefox 77.1, Linux Mint 19.3 Cinnamon, 64 bit. Intel Corporation HD Graphics 530,System: Firefox 77.1, Linux Mint 19.3 Cinnamon, 64 bit. Intel Corporation HD Graphics 530, Intel© Core™ i5-6600 CPU @ 3.30GHz × 4. The problem has been occurring for some time, even with older browser versions and previous Mint distributions.

Like I said, it happens a lot on YouTube. Or www.zeit.de, the last crash today was: www.heise.de/tp. After I rebooted the computer, the heise link worked again. But I also experienced it several times that nothing worked properly until I reinstalled Firefox. I have never reported this as a bug until today. But the crash reports are still in the designated folder.

Thanks! Can you open about:crashes, transmit unsent crash reports and post some of these (bp-xxxxxxx)?
(Optionally, automatic upload of crash reports can be enabled on about:preferences#privacy-reports.)

Okay, I've compressed and uploaded some.

Okay, I've compressed and uploaded some.

There's no clear pattern to the callstacks, with crashes in JS GC, Skia, GfxScrollFrame.

Please try this:

  1. Reproduce the crash.
  2. Open about:addons, go to Plugins and disable Flash. Restart Firefox and try to reproduce the crash. (If it doesn't crash anymore: Perfect, you could leave it disabled for security reasons.)
  3. Disable all addons, restart Firefox and try to reproduce the crash.
  4. If the crash does not reproduce anymore, try to reenable addon by addon to find out which one caused it.

Hi, I can't reproduce that intentionally. It happens all the time and not just since yesterday. And it seems to be related to videos. But I'm not sure about that either. Nevertheless, I cannot consciously cause it. I have now three browsers installed on my system, because I really don't like the changes Firefox has gone through in the last three years. This is a great pity, because I was even a Netscape user for a long time. But it is like that and this also leads to the fact that I don't want to switch off or deactivate any things just because Firefox crashed again.
I'm sorry. I hope I was able to help with my bug report and I would be really happy if the project would find its way back to the qualities it once was.

What could help the most is if you could disable flash and addons for some days to check if the crash doesn't come back. It's also possible that problems outside of Firefox cause this behavior.

Same! ^^ But still you don't have an optimal Firefox configuration. ;) Some tips:

  • You could enable OpenGL hardware rendering, it leads to much better performance: Open about:config, set gfx.webrender.all to true and restart Firefox.
  • Enable Tracking Protection on about:preferences#privacy, or just set privacy.trackingprotection.enabled and privacy.trackingprotection.socialtracking.enabled to true.
  • Disable Flash for security reasons on about:addons > Plugins, or open about:config, create a new boolean pref called plugin.disable and set it true. Web browsers remove Flash support in December.
  • Consider disabling third-party cookies on about:preferences#privacy or set network.cookie.cookieBehavior to 1.
  • Replace "Deaktivierungs-Add-on von Google Analytics" and "Nano Adblocker" with https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/ublock-origin/.
  • It looks like Firefox 80 will support VAAPI hardware video decoding: bug 1619523 comment 36 🥳

But it is like that and this also leads to the fact that I don't want to switch off or deactivate any things just because Firefox crashed again.

At the moment, that seems the only way to narrow it down.

Every help is needed for that. ^^ I'm just a user like you and part of a super small community. Please definitely keep filing bugs about problems you encounter. :)

Thanks for the tips. I'm gonna try that out. If there is another crash with the changes I will report about it in this thread.

So, in the last two days Firefox has crashed twice again. Just now I rebooted the system and it's running again. But what is this? I followed all your tips and even the latest version of Firefox shows this behaviour, with Flash Addon turned off. As I said, this corresponds to my experience in the last two to three years. There may be improvements in functionality, but overall Firefox has become much more unstable and I don't like many of the conceptual changes. I assume that with my knowledge and the energy I have available I won't be able to fix these problems. So I have uploaded two more crash reports and consider this bug report open, but although unsolved it is somehow closed for me.

Thanks again for your help.

Thanks for testing this configuration! Could you open about:crashes, copy the two new Crash IDs (bp-xxxxxxxxx) and post them here?
Today, crashes are rare and get fixed as soon as they are understood, but in worst case you might just have a hardware defect.

Reporter, are you still experiencing this issue?

Flags: needinfo?(gsperling)

I've switched to using other browsers for the most part due to the way Firefox has evolved over the past few years. Firefox is still installed on my system, but it is no longer the default browser, so I can't say anything more about it.
