RESOLVED DUPLICATE of bug 1628025

People

(Reporter: virtual8086, Unassigned)

Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:78.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/78.0

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Have 10 most frequently used URLs in the dropdown list of the urlbar (location bar).
  2. Update to a new browser version (presumably 78.0.1+)

Actual results:

Two items have disappeared, one of them used to be the MOST frequently used one which has always been placed at the top of the list. The rest of the items is still there. The number of items switched to 8 in spite of browser.urlbar.maxRichResults bing explicitly set to 10.

Expected results:

The dropdown list of the urlbar (location bar) should not be affected by updates as this provides really poor user experience and basically destroys the normal workflow for most people using web browsers for more than a few years.

Bugbug thinks this bug should belong to this component, but please revert this change in case of error.

Component: Untriaged → Address Bar

As a side note: turns out the Shift+Delete feature for deletion of unwanted entries from the dropdown list has also been broken: neither Shift+Delete nor plain Delete works. Might be another case of why the bug affects the user privacy (what if one doesn’t want some website to appear in the dropdown when in public?).

I think you are being confused by the fact we replaced the empty search list with Top Sites. Top Sites are the same as they are in the New Tab Page or about:home, and you can customize them there. In Firefox 79 you'll be able to see maxRichResults Top Sites by increasing the number of visible Top Sites in the New Tab Page (show more than one row). You don't have to use the New Tab Page after the fact, it is only necessary to customize Top Sites and it's always reachable from about:home. From there you can also remove entries, pin entries or reorder them with Drag&Drop.

We understand the current situation is a bit confusing, that's because we plan to make Top Sites directly customizable from the Address Bar, but that work didn't happen yet.
