I've currently got the ash branch on loan, and I think my work would go easier if I used the branch as a try-like repo. IIUC that means marking it as non-publishing on the server side so that changes I push won't get marked public on my local machine. Thanks!

Set phases.publish=False in the hgrc for ash. Cheers!
