User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:79.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/79.0
Firefox for Android

Steps to reproduce:

Often when a manually entered address/search string is taking a long time to load for whatever reason (whether due to bad network conditions, slow server, long DNS lookup, etc.) and ultimately fails to load (whether due to me stopping the process or network/Firefox timing out), the address bar contents revert to whatever was there before I manually entered the new desired address.

To reproduce,

  1. Go to a tab with an existing page loaded.
  2. Set the network's DNS server to a nonexistent IP, like 192.0.2.10 (to simulate timeout, as per https://serverfault.com/questions/776049/how-to-simulate-dns-server-response-timeout).
  3. Try to open a URL at a domain not in the DNS cache, eg, http://ojsofkjd.am/, by manually typing it in the address bar.
  4. Immediately after hitting enter to begin loading, stop loading by clicking the "X".

Actual results:

The new address bar contents ("ojsofkjd.am") disappear, replaced by the old contents (address of previous page).

Expected results:

The newly-typed contents should remain regardless of any exception to the loading process.

I should note that while this bug occurs on the desktop version of Firefox, it is most bothersome on the Android version, where networking anomalies are much more common, and retyping long addresses or search strings on a touch screen is more of a pain.

Also note that while the steps to reproduce above do not appear to work on a new blank tab, I have often experienced this type of failure on a blank tab (with the address bar contents reverting to "about:blank"). I have not been able to reproduce this reliably however.

Setting a component for this issue in order to get the dev team involved.
If you feel it's an incorrect one please feel free to change it to a more appropriate one.

Component: Untriaged → Widget: Gtk
Product: Firefox → Core

Can you attach your about:support page please? Also do you see that with new builds? (91).
Thanks.

This is still a bug in version 91.0.2. I have attached about:support (copied textually, since FF Android does not seem to offer save page functionality). Thanks for looking into this.

Component: Widget: Gtk → Widget: Android

Hello, I think correct please where to report bugs about Firefox/Android is https://github.com/mozilla-mobile/fenix/issues/

Moving all open Core::Widget: Android bugs to GeckoView::General (then the triage owner of GeckoView will decide which ones are valuable and which ones should be closed).

Component: Widget: Android → General
Product: Core → GeckoView
Version: 79 Branch → unspecified

This is the expected behaviour.
