Intermittent, still trying to figure the STR for this.
(new profile, a redirect hyperlink then at some point i will end up with the screenshot behavior for one particular engine)
[Actual Result]
Somehow, my search mode ends in a state in which a search mode enable will show a history suggestion with no input.
[Expected Result:]
No history suggestion should be shown on entering an engine search mode. (excludes tabs. bookmarks, history)

Managed to reproduce this behavior only on Windows 10 atm, tries on Mac failed.

The screenshot shows a past Bing search for "https://softvision.com" -- notice it has a clock icon, which is what is shown for past searches. I can reproduce your screenshot by entering search mode with Bing, typing "https://softvision.com", pressing enter, and then entering search mode with Bing again. This is the expected behavior. Can you confirm this is what happened?

Yes, I think that's the case. I was under the impression that there shouldn't be search suggestions when in search mode.
I notice the historic items are limited to two (two history suggestions, 2 search with and 6 search suggestions ). Can you confirm that this is expected?
Also, most likely different issue, I have a bing search for example that is "leaking" in the amazon search mode (see screenshot). -- seems this happens just for amazon and wikipedia search mode.

The first screenshot there is expected behaviour. We show search history for the given search engine, even for an empty query. The second is bug 1659775.
