Affected platforms:
MacOS 10.14
Windows 10 pro (video controls in main video are missing as well, video included)
Aarch64
Affected versions:
Latest Nightly 81.0a1 (2020-08-19) (64-bit)
Beta 80.0 (64-bit)
Release 79.0 (64-bit)
Steps to reproduce:
1- Launch Firefox
2- Go to https://www.livescience.com/64113-dark-matter-mysteries.html and scroll down to find the video shown in attachment
3- Start playing video
4- Open pip
Expected Results:
Video should continue playing without issue through pip
Actual:
Pause/play button is corrupted and not in synch with main video on the left.
Regression-Range:
I will provide one asap.
Notes:
a- Sometimes pip button is not even visible, one way of triggering the toggle is by performing right click on video. https://www.webmd.com/coronavirus-in-context/video/paul-offit-vaccine is also having issues with pip functionality (videos included)
b- Sometimes video controls in main video are missing in https://www.livescience.com/64113-dark-matter-mysteries.html for windows 10 pro.
c- Pause/play button is corrupted and not in synch with main video on the left.
Severity Suggestion:
I would suggest S3 severity since there is a workaround which is using main video controls

Some additional notes on Affected versions:
a- Sometimes pip button is not even visible, one way of triggering the toggle is by performing right click on video. (for release and beta the pip toggle won't ever appear in https://www.livescience.com/64113-dark-matter-mysteries.html, but it does in https://www.webmd.com/coronavirus-in-context/video/paul-offit-vaccine )
b- Sometimes video controls in main video are missing in https://www.livescience.com/64113-dark-matter-mysteries.html (I could only reproduce this in nightly for windows 10 pro.)
c- Pause/play button is corrupted and not in synch with main video on the left. (I can reproduce this in all 3 versions, release, beta and nightly)

I performed mozregression until version 70.0a1 (2019-08-17) (64-bit) , and bug is reproducible (in fact, for https://www.livescience.com/64113-dark-matter-mysteries.html link the pip togle is present but nothing happens when clicking). Should I go further with the investigations?

Thanks, Clara.
I think this is a case of a site not listening for "play" or "pause" events to update the state of their player. Hey DenSchub, what are the chances we could reach out to this site and ask them to pay attention to those events?
Reproduced on latest Nightly 82.0a1 (2020-08-31) (64-bit).
Regards,

(In reply to Mike Conley (:mconley) (:⚙️) from comment #5)
Hey DenSchub, what are the chances we could reach out to this site and ask them to pay attention to those events?
100%! In fact, I just did send them a message, and I'll update this bug if I receive a reply.
I'll move this issue into the WebCompat product, as this is not a bug inside Firefox.

I was able to reproduce the issue. When triggering PIP, the video is paused and Play/Pause button is not in sync all the times.

Tested with:
Browser / Version: Firefox Nightly 86.0a1 (2020-12-16)
Operating System: Windows 10 Pro

I was able to reproduce the issue on latest Nightly 86.0a1 (2021-01-21)(64-bit), Beta 85.0b9, and Firefox 84.0.2 on Ubuntu 20.4.
I'll change flags accordingly.

I have re-confirmed the reproduction of this bug in Beta v100.0b4 and Nightly v101.0a1. Confirmed on all platforms (W10, Ubu20, Mac11).
Moreover, it seems that when the PiP toggle is clicked, the video is also paused. If the video is then (re)played from the original player, the user can (only after that) use the PiP's play/pause button.

I was not able to reproduce the issue. For both videos, the PIP Play/Pause button is in sync with the video player button:

Reporter, is the issue still reproducible on your side?
Tested with:
Browser / Version: Firefox Release 100.0.2 (64-bit)/ Firefox Nightly 103.0a1 (2022-05-30) (64-bit)
Operating System: Windows 10 PRO x64

The issue is still reproducible on Windows 10 and MacOS 11.6 using Firefox 101.0 / Firefox 102.0b1 / Firefox Nightly 103.0a1.
As Daniel stated in Comment 12, when toggling PiP mode, the video gets paused (that seems to be the reason why the play/pause get out of sync) and then gets back in sync after being "re"played from the main player window.
