Hi Lance,
Is the pdf attached in the email or there is a link to a pdf file in the email's body?
Please test if the issue occurs to you in safe mode (add-ons disabled). Here is a link that can help you do that:
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode
If the issue persists, also test it using a fresh profile, you can find the steps to do that below:
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-firefox-profiles?redirectlocale=en-US&redirectslug=Managing-profiles#w_starting-the-profile-manager
Also, can you try this on the latest version of nightly? You can download it from here: https://nightly.mozilla.org/
I will move this over to a component so developers can take a look over it. If is not the correct component please feel free to change it to an appropriate one.
Thanks for the report.
Best regards, Clara.
The pdf is attached in the email as per your question I have yet to test it in safe mode.
Used Mozilla nighty and when clicked on attachment sub box opened up allowing options including save

I suspect this is a duplicate of bug 1653255. If you go to about:config and turn pdfjs.handleOctetStream
to false
, does that make things work correctly? If so, this is fixed in nightly and beta, and you can switch to nightly/beta, or wait for 81 beta to become release (Sept. 22, in 3 weeks), keeping that pref turned off for a while longer.
I toggled the pdf handler configuration to FALSE but it did NOT fix the fault even though it does seem similar to bug 1653255 - I may just have to wait until 81beta to see if it does fix the problem

If changing the pref to false doesn't fix it, I suspect waiting for 81 might also not... can you elaborate on what webmail application/provider you're seeing this with?
My webmail service provider is optus webmail - optusnet.com.au

Sorry I have not had time to use the inspector but just by way of a reply at the time I went back to old emails with pdf attachments and the action was the same.

Karl, do we have anyone with access to this webmail provider who could help figure out what's going on here?

Without being able to reproduce, this is tricky to diagnose and fix. Some more questions:
- in about:config, what's the value of
browser.link.open_newwindow
? If it's 2, does changing it to 3 make a difference? - in the Firefox Options, if you search for "PDF", what is the default action listed? If you change it to "save to disk", does that help?
- are you only seeing this with PDFs, or also with other attachment files?

the value was a 2, I changed it to a 3 and when the pdf link was clicked a save dialogue box appeared!!.
Also changing pdf options helps as well with no dialogue box
my main mail attachments are pdfs so it is difficult to tell if the problem is with other file types

optus webmail - optusnet.com.au
We never had any reports for this service. And it's not possible to create an account without being client of optus. So indeed at distance it will be difficult to diagnose.
I wonder if it's an issue with content type.

Please refer to comment 16 above - this may be a solution to the bug.

Thanks very much! It appears kernp was right and this is the same issue as bug 1656753 - we'll track coming up with a fix there. In the meantime, you now have a workaround, at least. :-)
