RESOLVED DUPLICATE of bug 1675918

People

(Reporter: brucegoren, Unassigned)

Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:80.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/80.0

Steps to reproduce:

Allowed Thunderbird to update to version 68.12.0 .

Actual results:

Taskbar pinned shortcut link went generic and lost functionality. Had to remove non functional generic icon from taskbar and make new shortcut from updated executable to drag onto task bar.

Expected results:

Icon should have retained Thunderbird image and retained workable shortcut link to the updated executable.

This has occurred with many previous updates, only reporting it now as I am surprised it persists.

Component: Untriaged → OS Integration
Summary: After updates Thunderbird pinned to task bar icon goes generic and Windows 10 reports it is moved or missing. Workaround is to remove the generic icon , find the Thunderbird executable and drag it anew to the task bar for pinning. → After updates Thunderbird pinned to task bar icon goes generic - Windows 10 reports it is moved or missing.

I'm on Windows 10 and running two different versions, one of which is 68.12.0 32bit running from default location 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe"

I've had no issues with loss of icon on taskbar for version 68*

I see that you have Windows OS 64bit, but are you running Thunderbird 64bit or 32bit version?

Is 'Mozilla Thunderbird' in the 'Program Files' folder or the 'Program (x86) Files' folder, or do you see a 'Mozilla Thunderbird' in both locations ?
Or have you installed the program somewhere different from default eg: on another drive?

I do have a problem pinning a second installation running version 78.2.1 64bit which is on a different drive.
This second one was on the Taskbar when installed, but first update removed it. I did not get a generic icon etc. This auto removed it from the Taskbar list as well.

I have just manually reset it, so Windows Taskbar says both are selected in 'Select which icons appear on the taskbar', but I cannot get both to appear without performing the right click on executable file and selecting pin to taskbar.
I've pinned it back again.
I'll watch this and see when it disappears and whether it is when an update occurs.

This has happened to me a dozen times. It's worse when you have specific -p profile switches hooked up with the pinned link, they all go down the drain.

re : second installation running version 78.2.1 64bit which is on a different drive.
Confirm update to 78.2.2 - shortcut icon auto removed from the Taskbar again. But the desktop shortcut remained in situ ok.

Version 68.12.0 still has taskbar shortcut icon - uneffected.
Windows Taskbar 'Select which icons appear on the taskbar' list only has the one thunderbird listed for version 68.12.0 win32.

I have the same problem every time Thunderbird updates, again this morning.

I went looking for reasons and discovered the following in my %APPDATA%\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned directory:

Perhaps it is similar to this Firefox bug (since I have both 'Thunderbird' and 'Mozilla Thunderbird' style links)?

Firefox only combines with pinned taskbar icon if taskbar icon is named "Mozilla Firefox" bug 644914

I'll try deleting all of them and see what happens next update. @brucegoren, what do you see in the same location?

The duplicates seem to be irrelevant, after today's update the same thing happened (white document task bar icon, "Can't open this item - It might have been moved, renamed, or deleted. Do you want to remove this item?" dialogue when clicked).

The link seems to have been updated today, but apparently incorrectly?

Bruce, Thomas,
Do you still see this when using a newer version?

Flags: needinfo?(bugzilla2007)
Flags: needinfo?(brucegoren)

I haven't seen this problem for quite a few update cycles now.

Still happening for me.
I am now on 78.10.2 (32-bit)
I tried deleting all the duplicate links several updates ago and nothing changed, I think I'm back up to 13 or 14 iterations.

Flags: needinfo?(brucegoren)

It has become second nature having to fix those broken taskbar links, so I would no longer notice or remember if I have done this for the latest version or not. Will pay attention for the next update.

However, given that both TB bug 1675918 and the corresponding FF bug 1495295 are still open, I think it's unlikely (though not impossible) that this has just disappeared.

Duping forward to TB bug 1675918, which has more info.
