Could you share a crash report? You can find them at about:crashes ?

The original symptom was a tab crash in the FVD Speed Dial page. The extension author released an update but the reporter said it did not help.

Not sure of the best way to capture information on that kind of crash.

I'm taking this bug for investigation, as I have seen multiple reports (some outside of Bugzilla) about an alleged increase in extension crashes since Firefox 80.

bug 1655916 lists some stories (https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1655916#c9 and below) even though they are not necessarily related to the bug (because that bug is about Linux, whereas the comments are about Windows).

I wrote those comments in bug 1655916 and they are related to both Windows and Linux users. And I'm still receiving new reports every day.
This is 100% bug in Firefox 80 including 80.0.1.
It's been reported also on my issue tracker: https://github.com/fastaddons/GroupSpeedDial/issues/16

Hello,

I’ve attempted to reproduce the issue on Windows 10 Pro 64-bit and Ubuntu 16.04 using Release 80.0 and updating it to 80.0.1 with several add-ons installed (Speed Dial [FVD], uBlock Origin, Tree Style Tab and NimbusMind). Several tries have been attempted using both the penultimate version of the add-on which supposedly caused the crash (Speed Dial) and the latest version, however without success. No crashes have occurred.

I tried to reproduce this on Linux and Windows by simulating low memory (ulimit -v 3000000 on Linux; using a Windows VM with 1GB memory), but cannot get the extension process to crash. Firefox as a whole crashes.

To those who are experiencing this issue:

  • Please let me know whether there was a shortage of memory (RAM) when this issue occurred.
  • Look at about:crashes, and share the crash ID(s) if they are present (bp-...).

Probably not a low memory issue, one user told me he has 32GB RAM and barely used while it happens. (for me it happened when I was kind of low on memory but I'm always using about 70 - 90%).
Not a Firefox crash, only tab with extension crashed so there is no crash report.
I will try to find a way to reproduce it as well...

ulimit isn't how you restrict the memory usage; you want to use a memory cgroup.

Hello,

I’m still unable to reproduce the issue and thus I cannot provide a regression window.

Thanks for attempting to verify Alex. The reproduction steps are currently unknown, so you don't have to look at this bug.

Severity: -- → S2
Priority: -- → P1

The problem still persists. All my addons are crashing with the new update. Please fix this soon its annoying.

I just made an account to post here. This is almost crippling. Felt like it used to happen once a day or so but today it's happened at least half a dozen times. I'm still not sure how to reproduce but if I can post any logs or anything please let me know.

Several users of my addon (including me) confirmed that Firefox 81 fixed the issue. Also I haven't received anymore reports from the new 81.
