We should remove the static toolkit linking configure options,
--with-static-gtk & --with-static-qt. With the exception of a "static"
(--disable-shared --enable-static) builds, I have not been able to get those
options to work. (Our qt support is terminally broken anyway.) I vaguely recall
pavlov stating that we can't statically link gtk against multiple components
that are dynamically loaded because static bits of the library are then
initialized multiple times.
