Steps to reproduce:

Using Firefox 80.0.1 64-bit on MacOSX.
Visit any page with img elements with a title attribute. Comics on https://xkcd.com/ are an excellent example, and that is where I first noticed the issue. Hover over the image to show the tooltip.

Actual results:

Tooltip is wide enough to show the tooltip text without cropping. It should always be the same size each time it appears.

Expected results:

About 90% of the time the tooltip is only about half as wide as the wrapped tooltip text, so part of the text is cropped off.

The rest of the time, the tooltip is the expected size. Sometimes the size will change while the tooltip is being displayed - see video.

(The video was recorded at http://www.pbworks.net/snip/fftooltips.html, a site created to show off the similar, much older bug #336407. The description in the video is not relevant to the current bug.)

Forgot to add: the problem still occurs in safe mode, the video was recorded in safe mode.

In case it's not obvious, actual and expected results in the bug report are swapped somehow.

I definitely can not reproduce it on Mac OS 10.15.6 and Release v80.0 or v80.0.1 (latest build today) or the latest Nightly v83 on the "https://xkcd.com/" site. I have attempted it in a new profile AND safe-mode. There must be something special to your system.

1. Can you please share the contents of the "about:support" page on the browser that it reproduces on?
2. I suspect it might be related to the display/graphics set-up you have. Cand you tell us what device you are using and which exact Mac OS version?

More testing has shown that the intermittent bug only occurs when Firefox is dragged onto an external display. If the Firefox window is dragged onto the built-in Retina display, the tooltip displays normally 100% of the time. When dragged back to an external display, the problem reoccurs. So yes it would appear to be related to the display driver or hardware and maybe can't be fixed within Firefox.

Regarding the multiple attachments of the support page, I would mention that

• When pasting the contents of "about:support" into the bug report, an alert is displayed: "Couldn't upload the text as an attachment. Please try again later. Error: null". So I tried a few times. When the page is reloaded, it seems the attachments succeeded after all.
• No obvious way to delete the redundant attachments from the bug report.
  Sorry about that.

I assume this component is appropriate. Please set a better one if it isn't.

This bug was reattempted on an iMac with an external display but it wouldn't reproduce.

Does it still reproduce in the latest Firefox 81.0?
Can you try reproducing it in safe-mode? (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode)

I can reproduce this issue, reproduced it on MacBook Pro - version 10.15 on the latest Nightly 83.0a1, Firefox 82 Beta 5, Firefox 81.0.1, and Firefox 78.3.1 esr.

The issue is reproducible when dragging the browser's window from the main display to the external monitor - the image tooltip is cut off. Refreshing Firefox solves the issue.

Note that while this bug may be a dupe of bug 1592206, there is a recent regression very similar to this: bug 1664670.
