User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/83.0.4103.61 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce:

opened an email and tried to print

Actual results:

when I hit the "print" button the program crashes every time.

Print Preview works but the button to print does nothing.

Expected results:

The email should have printed

I can confirm this is also happening in TB 81.0b4 on Linux.

Every time the print function is invoked against a message, TB crashes after briefly showing the "Printing Title: (Loading content for Printing) Preparing..." window, then crashes before reaching the print options dialogue.

No matter how this is invoked the result is the same, e.g.:

  1. via a shortcut
  2. right-click menu
  3. More -> Print... option

Same when attempting to print from the Calendar tab, same result in safe-mode (with add-ons etc. disabled).

It's been failing all of version 81. We will be very happy when 82 is out soon with the fix.

Print Preview window in 82.0b1 (Linux, 64-bit) doesn't show the printed message, not the usual page outline.

When forcing the Print Preview refresh, by changing the layout (from Portrait to Landscape, or vice-versa) the page outline is now show, but there is no content visible apart from the header and footer text.

Reporting here as suggested by Wayne in Bug 1662090 - hope this helps.

There is a regression in 82.0b1 with respect to the print dialogue - although it no longer crashes I have noticed two new issues:

  1. Prints are sent to the default printer no matter what printer has been selected before confirming ("Print") the print dialogue.
In my case, I have 2 printers installed, if I select "Print to File" and the press "Print", the print is always sent to the default printer ignoring the selection I have made.

  2. Print Preview doesn't work - when the print preview window opens, it shows white background where the page outline would normally be (see 1666518-Print_Preview_1.png). If I then force it to refresh the preview by changing the layout (say, from "Portrait" to "Landscape", or vice-versa), the preview refreshes and is now showing the page outline, however the page body is still blank (no message content) and only the header and footer is visible (top-left reads "Thunderbird", bottom-left reads page count "1 of 1") (see 1666518-Print_Preview_2.png).

Big picture, and a question for Magnus,

Core printing is seeing massive change/improvement in the past several months. I suspect we will continue to see nightly and beta have significant change and breakage in the coming months. Magnus, can you ask them about their plans and schedule, if you don't know it already?

While this activity is still occurring in Core, I think the most efficient course of action for users is visit the core bug reports at https://mzl.la/2G9v6UG and if they dont' find a bug that matches their issue, to file a new bug in a core printing component https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=Core

A further action item for us, when their development activity is nearing the end, is to a) triage still open thunderbird print bugs b) do significant testing, so that we don't ship lots of printing regressions in the next ESR

The Toolkit: Printing meta bug for those massive printing changes is bug 133787.

Users might also want to check that bug for their issue.

Thanks Walt. I had forgotten about toolkit. It's not at all clear to me how they are splitting the code and bugs - what belongs in core and what belongs in toolkit. Hopefully Magnus can find out.

There is bug 1658289 for what they know is there plans (part of that it already done on the tb side).
