User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:76.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/76.0
Steps to reproduce:
Read mails as usual
Actual results:
intel i7 2017, linux fedora 32, 16gb ram, SSD, 2 gmail accounts, accessing over vdsl
(60mbit link) in Canberra/Australia.
Occasionally all TB windows lock up for a minute, sometime a window with Wait/Kill buttons appears. Feels related to syncing (huge?) folders. All the clicks are still recorded so if I tried selecting messages while it is locked, after unlocking I can see the messages being clicked on in the exact order I clicked.
The problem appears with TB 68 and 78.2.2. It seems to happen more often and locks up for longer on huge folders (like Linux kernel mailing list with 100K mails). Reducing the number to 20K does not help much.
Running with addons disabled does not help.
Running as
MOZ_LOG=MsgPurge:5,MsgDB:5,MsgCopyService:5,msgcompose:5,MailDirStore:5,Mailbox:5,BayesianFilter:5,IMAP:5,IMAPOffline:5,LDAP:5,MIME:5,SMTP:5,timestamp /home/aik/thunderbird/thunderbird
produces zero output during these lockups. Surrounding traces don not provide clues. The examples are here:
http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=3063793&p=14871669#p14871669
The issue is not unique, colleagues reported the same.
Expected results:
Should not lock up or tell what takes it so long to unlock.

I don't know if it is a factor here, but linux user performance issues sometimes defy finding solutions.
What parts of http://kb.mozillazine.org/Performance_-_Thunderbird have you completed?
All of it :-( Interestingly I created a new profile, added all 3 accounts there and so far I have not seen any lockups. The old profile was somewhat 3+ years old, not sure how messed up it ended up being.

I had similar issues and creating a new profile resolved the problem for me. Looking at my problematic profile showed a lot of information from deleted accounts, but not deleted from the profile.
