Details
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:72.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/72.0
Steps to reproduce:
I cloned mozilla-central and installed and tried running ./mach bootstrap. On Pop!_OS 20.04 (Ubuntu focal does this too.)
Actual results:
It fails to bootstrap with the following error(s):
admin@pop-os:~/mozilla-central$ ./mach bootstrap
Note on Artifact Mode:
Artifact builds download prebuilt C++ components rather than building
them locally. Artifact builds are faster!
Artifact builds are recommended for people working on Firefox or
Firefox for Android frontends, or the GeckoView Java API. They are unsuitable
for those working on C++ code. For more information see:
https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Artifact_builds.
Please choose the version of Firefox you want to build:
- Firefox for Desktop Artifact Mode
- Firefox for Desktop
- GeckoView/Firefox for Android Artifact Mode
- GeckoView/Firefox for Android
Your choice: 2
Your version of Python 3 (3.8.2) is new enough.
Your version of Python 2 (2.7.18rc1) is new enough.

Expected results:
This should have ran correctly and gave no errors when creating a virtual environment. This is a fresh clone. Nothing has been changed whatsoever. I have tried re-cloning too.

Setting a component for this issue in order to get the dev team involved.
If you feel it's an incorrect one please feel free to change it to a more appropriate one.

AssertionError: Filename /home/admin/.local/lib/python3.8/site-packages/setuptools/_distutils does not start with any of these prefixes: ['/usr', '/usr']
This seems like this could have been fixed by bug 1654457 (the new version doesn't seem to have this assertion).

So reclone and try again?

You don't have to re-clone, just update to the latest central. Let me know if you continue to encounter an issue, otherwise we'll close this.
