Details
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:81.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/81.0
Steps to reproduce:
Viewing email messages that were sent formatted.
Actual results:
Some elements are hidden, but the option to show them, or to show them for particular domains, is missing.
Expected results:
The option (button) to show full formatted message contents is missing.
This is the Release Channel, so such a bug is unexpected.

In the past 4 days, this problem has continued. No formatted message is displayed as formatted, and there is no option anywhere to do so. Some messages are therefore heavily distorted. I would like to go back to the release previous to the occurrence of this bug. Anyone know where previous versions are available?

I have found the problem. Somehow, a recent update to Thunderbird changed the default message view. When I click on Menu > View > Message Body As, the enabled menu item is "Simple HTML". Changing this to "Original HTML" restores normal Thunderbird functionality.
So this isn't a software bug, it is a combination of an obscure feature ("Simple HTML") and a release changing this user option, which shouldn't happen.
Other users having this problem with Thunderbird should be advised of this solution, as this creates serious problems in reading messages!

Guess: either you happened to touch that menu option, or used some add-on that touched it. Changing it certainly wasn't done by active choice from Thunderbird.
