There are some annoying incompatibilities that don't happen with chromium.

Whenever I press ctrl+backspace, the comment textfield is cleared, instead of deleting the last word.
Another constant annoyance is that the space key's action (play/pause) is always applied twice if you used the button before. There's this braindead feature on youtube that brings up these blue frames on its player GUI elements, which is dreadful to begin with because it ruins hotkeys, but Firefox makes matters much worse with the play/pause button, because when you press space the input is registered twice, so the video plays for a split second then gets paused again, or vice-versa... Obviously space is captured both as a generic hotkey and by that blue-frame tabindex thing, that serves no useful purpose. Anyway this never happens on chromium.

avada, thanks for the report,

Let's see if I can come up with step by step to reproduce.

  1. Go to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LbpAEBhXTLs
  2. Tap on "Add a public comment…"
  3. Login
  4. Tap again on "Add a public comment…"
  5. Enter "It is very hard to manage information online."
  6. On macOS, Option + backspace

Actual:
It erases the string "online." as it should.

Space key to pause and play the video is also working

This was tested on Firefox Nightly 83.0a1 (2020-10-15) (64-bit) with macOS 10.15.7 (19H2)
Fresh profile, no added addons.

Oana, does he do something different on Windows?

Karl, the same thing as on MacOS, happens for me on Windows, Ctrl+backspace deletes the last string "online".
Also using the "Space" keyboard key, while typing, adds a "space" character and has no action on the video.

Tested with:
Browser / Version: Firefox Nightly 83.0a1 (2020-10-18)
Operating System: Windows 10 Pro

You're not supposed to press space in the comment field. That issuehappens with the player.

I can't reproduce the first one. Not sure if there's a specific hard-to-identify circumstance that brings it up (Firefox specialty) or whether it was fixed on someone's side.

The second issue happens just as well as it has been for at least a year. (both beta and central, new profiles)
Press play/pause, and afterward space malfunctions in the way described, meanwhile the blue outline appears.

It's really annoying that the blue focus thing isn't acknowledged, since it happens 100% of the time without fail, in any profile, and so far FF version even.

The other one does happen regularly. And it's remarkably annoying as well. I write a long comment, and it dramatically disappears when pressing ctrl+space. At least I can get it back via ctrl+z

I'm scratching my head as to why no-one else is bothered by this. Even the ctrl+backspace thing happens daily it seems.

The tabindex nonsense that ruins the youtube player is constant.

Needs Triage.

I've managed to reproduce the issue related to "Play/Pause+Space bar" but only on Firefox Release and not on Firefox Nightly (check attachement).

Related to "Ctrl+backspace", for me the last world is deleted both on Firefox Release and Firefox Nightly.

Tested with:
Browser / Version: Firefox Nightly 91.0a1 (2021-07-12), Firefox Release 89.0.2
Operating System: Windows 10 Pro

avada can you check with latest Firefox Nightly?

I'm on dev edition (v88 for the time being) and the space bar thing happens pretty much always.

The other is not constants. So I can't reproduce it on demand even with the FF version and profile I regular use.

I've checked again on latest Firefox Developer Edition and on Firefox Nightly and I was not able to reproduce any of the issues.

Tested with:
Browser / Version: Firefox Nightly 99.0a1 (2022-02-13), Firefox Developer Edition 98.0b4
Operating System: Windows 10 Pro

avada does it still occur on your side?

I've checked again on latest Firefox Developer Edition and on Firefox Nightly and I was not able to reproduce any of the issues.

I got the ctrl+backspace issue sporadically. Although I only recently updated from dev edition 95 to 97, and I wasn't commenting much on youtube.

I tried the space on the pause button right now. And it didn't happen.

I've checked again with "ctrl+backspace", but I was never able to reproduce it, it always deletes the last word.

Tested with:

  • copy/pasted text
  • short/long sentence
  • paragraph
  • written text

Tested with:
Browser / Version: Firefox Nightly 104.0a1 (2022-06-28)
Operating System: Windows 10 Pro

avada can you try with a clean profile with Firefox Nightly? If it is still reproduced, how often do you experience the issue?

Flags: needinfo?(dqeswn)

I was not able to reproduce the issue. On macOS, option+backspace deletes the last string, as expected.

Tested with:

Browser / Version: Firefox Release 102.0 (64-bit)/ Firefox Nightly 104.0a1 (2022-06-28) (64-bit)
Operating System: Mac OSX Catalina 10.15.7

I don't think I experienced this in recent months. At least it's very rare.

Thanks avada, let's close it for now and reopen it if it will reoccur in the future.
