User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:78.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/78.0

Steps to reproduce:

Update Thunderbird to version 82.0b3 and Yahoo gives a pop-up in an unknown browser. Cannot copy/paste link to continue.

Actual results:

Asks for imap authentitication? Cannot continue. Settings account Yahoo are according to Yahoo help. Worked before update was implemented.

Expected results:

Normal login. Other account from own provider, gmail and outlook are reachable.

note reporter is using 82.0b3, which implements Bug 1606339 - migrate yahoo users to OAuth2 to deal with Yahoo password login shutdown (DL October 20, 2020)

We need to decide in the next ~48 hours whether some adjustment is needed to avoid shipping a regression in 78.4.0

I tried the same with an older version of Thunderbird on a Linux system, attached temporarily the Yahoo account to Thunderbird, and got the same question from Yahoo. Thunderbird provides there an other browser and I could login into Yahoo and the problem is was solved there.
So I think the internal browser of Thunderbird is causing the problem. I tried to make an other browser (Opera instead of Firefox) my default browser but that makes no difference, obvious this browser is not used.

It's not another browser, it's a Thunderbird window. When you fill the needed infos in this window (it's save as it's still a TB window) does the login work?

Maybe we should add a branding name to the window title to show it's a TB window?

The window pops up with my Yahoo email address filled in. It is in Dutch, but I took the screen shot when I pressed on Next (Volgende in Dutch). In red letters it says: load the page again and try it again or use an other browser. The latest I cannot do as I cannot copy/past from the top line of the Thunderbird window so I am stuck.

Btw it is the Windows version I use.

Summary: Problems with login into Yahoo in new Beta release → Problems with login into Yahoo

Were you using password login before, and not OAUth2? (You should now be using OAuth2, just wanted to confirm.)

Have you set some special settings in Thunderbird, e.g. disabled javascript or disabled cookies?

Flags: needinfo?(mkmelin+mozilla)

I use OAuth2 for years using Thunderbirds way of saving passwords.

If you always used OAuth2 nothing should have changed.

I tried the same with an older version of Thunderbird on a Linux system, attached temporarily the Yahoo account to Thunderbird, and got the same question from Yahoo.

Which version did you use? If you can reproduce the error with something older than 78.4.0 bug 1606339 could not be involved.

I tried it on a Knoppix liv-usb version 8.6.1. It used Thunderbird 60.9.1 (32 bits). There I could add Yahoo with the same Thunderbird windows which popped up.

I went back to version 80.0b2 and the same problem occurred. So it has to do with something Yahoo changed and which the browser window of Thunderbird cannot handle.

If you rolled back to 80.0b2 but using the same profile it won't change the outcome if something from bug 1606339 updated your setting.
In that bug we force OAuth2 authentication method for both incoming and SMTP server.
Did you have a different configuration for your Outgoing server?

I use the default settings and checked if OAuth2 was present. On the internet I see all kinds of "solutions" for the problems with Yahoo, bur nothing works.

If you open the developer tools toolbox, do you see errors happening in the console when you do this?

These are the same things I was seeing in Windows 10 in English, and reported in another bug. Seems to be an issue. People get a new window that is unfamiliar and want to bail out immediately. I know I did.

I upgraded to version 83.0b1 but the problem stays. I get again the authentication window from Yahoo, but I cannot fill in my password.

I faced the same problem here. The real issue was that I had cookies disabled in Thunderbird. After I enabled them, the OAuth2 login from Yahoo completed successfully. Please check your cookie settings in Thunderbird.

e.vandyken, do you agree?
If you do, that would make this bug 1174797
