Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:81.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/81.0

Steps to reproduce:

openSuse Tumbleweed

I am trying to add new IMAP account.
I launch Add New Account (autosetup wizard)
I enter Name, Email, Password

  1. The auto configuration offers only POP3 account. Does not give me selection of POP3 or IMAP

  2. The guessed username is wrong and cannot be updated.

  3. When I switch to manual config and configure the following I get message "Thunderbird failed to find the setting for your email account" -> shocking because the details are correct!

  4. Protocol IMAP

  5. Server mail.xxx.com

  6. Port 993

  7. SSL: ssl/tls

  8. Autodetect or normal password

  9. username: username

  10. I have to click on advance config. As I believe the setting is correct. I leave it as is.

Actual results:

The auto setup is simply not working. I can reproduce the same problem on all computers I have with any Thunderbird version.

I go to KMAIL and everything works.

Expected results:

I expect simple setup with Thunderbird for IMAP. Just type in the details and it should work.
It should test the connection and tell me if its working.
It should test the authentication and tell me if its working.
It should test the certificate and tell me if its working or if I want to accept self-generated cert.

I also expect proper messaging from Thundebird. If something does not work, I need to know why. There is zero messaging if IMAP does not work.

It's certainly working in general - you'd have to figure out exactly why IMAP doesn't work for your case. (Note that the SMTP must be ok as well for the settings to go through.)
