Double-click on contact(s) from Contacts Sidebar always adds recipient(s) to TO: field although focus/cursor was in Cc/Bcc field. Dragging contacts from Contacts sidebar to custom header fields (mail.compose.other.header) fails.

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:81.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/81.0
Steps to reproduce:
- Open a new mail compose window
- Click on Cc/Bcc to see the Cc/Bcc recipient row
2a. move the cursor tho the selected row - the cursor is blinking in the Cc/Bcc field
2b. move the cursor with the mouse to the Contacts sidebar
3a. Double click on any email address at Contacts Sidebar
3b. Slide/move the recipients email address from Contact Sidebar by LEFT mouse button into the Cc/Bcc row
Actual results:
4a/4b. The recipient was put into the TO row
Expected results:
4a./4b. The recipient should be put into Cc/Bcc row, as it is active by cursor (4a) or is moved by mouse to this field (4b)
The same behavior with other fields...Bcc, Reply-to, Return receipt...

Thank you for this report. Double click failure from contacts side bar is an age-old known issue, now with better chances to get fixed in the new recipient area where the failure even more apparent. I've made my comments long back on the other bug.
Drag and drop works correctly 78.4.0 (64-bit), win10.
I am sorry, tried to look for a similar issue but did not found. As i used these option in previous TB (56) and i think the problem was not present, I posted it.
But in one think you are not right. The Drag and drop does not work on the rows Return-Receipt-To and Dispostion-Notification-To. I use this two options with the addon Send later, as it is (or was) not compatible with classic Return receipt request. I used to double-click on my own email address which is in the contacts sidebar and this worked in TB 56. So I am not sure if this issue should not be partially opened as you write the drag and drop is working.

Thank you, your concerns are appreciated.
Pls avoid cross-posting comments. Needinfo would have been better here, it's a bit off-topic on the other bug.

Problem of "double-click on contact in contacts side-bar always creates To-recipient, never CC/BCC" has been around forever.
But in one think you are not right. The Drag and drop does not work on the rows Return-Receipt-To and Dispostion-Notification-To. I use this two options with the addon Send later, as it is (or was) not compatible with classic Return receipt request. As it involves add-ons, maybe it's a problem of the addon, outside the control of TB.
Or maybe the addon is using custom header via mail.compose.other.header pref, in that case it's something that Thunderbird could fix.
I've filed a bug for that case:
Bug 1674937 - Drag and drop of email address(es) from contacts side bar to custom header does nothing, should drop csv addresses.
So with that, all aspects of this bug are now covered. :-)

But in one think you are not right. The Drag and drop does not work on the rows Return-Receipt-To and Dispostion-Notification-To.
What happens if you drag an address from contacts sidebar into Disposition-Notification-To field created by addon?
I don't quite believe that the address will end up in To-field (for double-click, yes, it will happen).
I use this two options with the addon Send later, as it is (or was) not compatible with classic Return receipt request.
That incompatibility is a bug of the addon. Pls contact addon author.
I used to double-click on my own email address which is in the contacts sidebar and this worked in TB 56.
Not for any of the in-built fields like CC/BCC, that's bug 271917 which is very old.
If double-click on sidebar-contact ever succeded to add it into Disposition-Notification-To field of addon, meaning the addon was patching over TB's bug. If that's not working now, we can say it's addon bug ;-). Otherwise it's bug 271917.
I am sorry, I never faced such a situation, that my bug was closed as duplicated (which i still think is - partly - not as it worked fine in TB 56) and resolved (your comment: Drag and drop works correctly 78.4.0 (64-bit), win10.).
Only for you information, I did not know, how to deal with this situation and did not know, if I am entitled to reopen the bug with needmoreinfo, as some developer have closed it:) Therefor I asked for an answer and as it did not come in couple of days, I posted it also in the other bug, as Bugzilla pre-filled the comment window with my previous comment from this bug - as this had happened, I did not know, if you get also reports from closed bug.... Next time, I will change to needomoreinfo:)
Part of my report concerning the bug is still true. Please, try it. Neither the Send later addon nor any other addon has influence on the behavior, as this behavior can be reproduced with all addons disabled. I mentioned the addon only for the reason to explain, that I am often (for years) using the Row Return-Receipt-To (as classic Return receipt button does not work, if you send your message later with this addon) in the drag and drop way and in the way of double click. But as explained, you mentioned "Drag and drop works correctly 78.4.0 (64-bit), win10" which is NOT TRUE. Please try to drag and drop some email address from Contact side bar to the row RETURN-RECEIPT-TO (not To, CC, Bcc, Reply to). It is not working. The only way, how you can get and email address to the Return-Receipt-To field is:
- write it manually
- drag and drop (or cut-paste) it from To/Cc/Bcc field.
You can drag and drop address from contacts side bar to 4 fields: Reply-To, To, CC, Bcc
You can NOT drag and drop it to 2 fields: Return-Receipt-To and Disposition-Notification-To.
This behavior occurs with All addons disabled to and occurs with Addons enabled, so Addons have no influence on this behavior.
This worked well in TB56...therefore i still think it is a bug and this part of my post is not a duplicate with bug 271917.

When I open a new mail composition window and the Contacts Sidebar.
I select an address and click the “Add to To:” button it gets added to the correct field.
Click on Cc/Bcc to see the Cc/Bcc recipient row
Move the cursor to the selected row, the cursor is blinking in the Cc/Bcc field
Move the cursor with the mouse to the Contacts Sidebar
Double-click on any email address at Contacts Sidebar
The address gets added to the “To:” field. Probably the default action for a double click.
When I slide/move the recipients email address from the Contact Sidebar by LEFT mouse button into the Cc/Bcc row, it is dragged and dropped into the correct field. Although I would probably use the “Add to” buttons.
Sorry I don't use the extension and can't test the other fields.
I would agree it is a duplicate of bug 271917 and you should followup with the other issue in bug 1674937.
Guys, I am writing this for 3rd time and give it a last try... THIS IS DEFINITELY NOT AN ADDON FUNTIONALITY. It is a TB-built in change possibility. You do not get this two headers (Return-Receipt-To and Disposition-Notification-To) by some ADD ON, but by TB change (works also on a CLEAR install):
about:config
Preference name: mail.compose.other.header
Type:string
Value:Return-Receipt-To,Disposition-Notification-To.
Give it a try please... it was working in TB56, now it is not...
I am definitely not speaking about Cc and Bcc fields...

Hey Mr. Orwel,
re-opening closed bugs may expose you to developers' wrath! ;-)
Jokes aside, let's go through your issues one more time so that you can rest assured that everything is covered.
Thank you for alerting us to a hitherto unknown problem which I have re-filed as bug 1674937.
It's unfortunate that you never mentioned your use of mail.compose.other.header pref until your comment 7, which is crucial for understanding the second part of this bug. Using my crystal ball skills of reading what reporters write between the lines, it was me who first mentioned this pref in comment 3. Only I shouldn't have connected mail.compose.other.header pref with addon use, sorry for that.
Also, this bug is a good illustration why we insist on 1-issue-per-bug: You are mixing two issues which is confusing for everyone including yourself:
- actual result 4b is wrong
- steps for your second problem involving custom header are not even existing in comment 0.
- bug summary was also getting it wrong because it was mixing the two issues (I have disentangled that now).
- you then wrote a lot trying to disentangle and clarify the drag issue (please try to keep comments short - I know it's hard...).
Final analysis:
- We now understand that you're using TB's inbuilt pref
mail.compose.other.header = "Return-Receipt-To,Disposition-Notification-To"to add those two headers, no addons involved. - Your problem 1: Double-click on contact(s) in contacts side bar with prior focus (blinking cursor) in any field other than To: (including CC/BCC/
Return-Receipt-Toor D-N-T) fails to add contact(s) to the previously focused field, but always adds them to To: instead (both in TB 68 and TB 78; definitely also in TB 56 but it won't matter because 56 is very obsolete). The double-click misdirection problem is fully covered in bug 271917, and from your nested summary, double-click was standing out enough to justify duplicating to there. - Your problem 2: Dragging contact(s) with mouse from contacts side bar to a custom header field defined via inbuilt
mail.compose.other.headerpref (e.g.Return-Receipt-Toor D-N-T) fails (does nothing in TB 78). This (only this!) used to work in TB 68 and before, so it's a regression as you correctly point out. The drag-to-custom header issue is fully covered in bug 1674937 which I created for you to cover the other half of your bug with a clean start, so that it becomes actionable for developers.
Bottom line:
- You raised and mixed two problems in this bug.
- Both of them are covered in other bugs:
- Bug 271917 - Bcc: and Cc: fall back to To: in compose window when double clicking a contact/email address/recipient/mailing list in contacts sidebar
- Bug 1674937 - Drag and drop of email address(es) from contacts side bar to custom header does nothing, should drop csv addresses
- This bug 1673579 is not actionable, fully covered elsewhere so no longer needed, and must be closed as a duplicate of either of the above. (Unfortunately, it is technically impossible to mark it a duplicate of both. Not a problem as long as both aspects are covered.)
Using my discretion as a member of staff working in triage, I hereby decide to close this bug as a duplicate of bug 1674937 (the drag issue), because that's the new part which you have helped us to uncover. I'll also mark it as "Depends on: bug 271917" (the double-click issue). So both issues are now linked from your bug.
Thank you very much for your contribution!
