I have been following the progress of bug <A
HREF="http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=163962">163962</A> and was
pleased to hear that it was fixed. However I tried going to bbc.co.uk/hindi and
was not able to view the page on the latest nightly build of Mozilla (Trunk) on
Mac OS X 10.2. Mac OS X 10.2 comes with the devanagari TTF font
"DevanagariMT.ttf" and I am not sure if this may be the issue because from what
I understand the fix for 163962 only applies to sun.unicode.india-0 font?
How hard would it be to support this in Mac OS X 10.2?
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open the latest nightly build of Mozilla (Trunk) in Mac OS X 10.2
2. Browse to the URL http://www.bbc.co.uk/hindi
Actual Results:
The hindi characters look garbled up.
Expected Results:
Should have rendered it like this:
http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/attachment.cgi?id=97343&action=view
As I mentioned above Mac OS X 10.2 now supports Devanagari input/output out of
the box. It would be nice if Mozilla (and Chimera) also supported this script.

Not yet... ;-(
Assuming the time between 1.2alpha and 1.2beta doesn't require driver appoval we
may be able to turn it "on" on all tinderboxen and the finally switch
"--enable-ctl" to "--disable-ctl" ... :)
prabhat - what do you think ?

OT: I filed bug 167477 ("RFE: Set --enable-ctl on some seamonkey-ports") as
first step on the way to get the CTL code enabled by default...
Suraj, as a workaround, you can download and install the TITUS Cyberbit Basic
font from [http://titus.fkidg1.uni-frankfurt.de/unicode/tituut.asp]. Mozilla
will use that to display the Devanagari characters at your Unicode page.

On Mac OS X 10.2.1 with Mozilla (build ID 2002091014) I have the same bug. It
does not come from font DevanagariMT nor from the system since the same file
displays correctly with a text editor (screenshot "pepper_osx.pdf") but not with
Mozilla (screenshot "mozilla_osx.pdf"). The actual problem is that ligatures are
not formed, and they are quite necessary in Devanagari as well as several other
Asian scripts.

I added a screenshot of Mozilla 1.2.1 with the title bar properly rendered
however the body has garbage on it. I assume the title bar is rendered by the
OS and not Mozilla which is why it is displaying properly. How much work would
it be for Mozilla to render the body properly?

I think the problem is Mozilla do not understand the format of these TTF font.
Currently, mozilla only know 2-3 format of TTF font on Mac. I need to take a
look at the font to see what happen there.
Estimate development time- 10-15 days

what a hack. I have not touch mozilla code for 2 years. I didn't read these bugs
for 2 years. And they are still there. Just close them as won't fix to clean up.

same is true with Firefox 1.5b on OS X 10.4.2
Aside from ftang's comment about font formats here, bug 205476 seems more
informative and has good discussion on ATSUI and performance issues...duping.
