Steps to reproduce:

Since Version 78 (I think) hundreds of unwanted file are create in Thunderbird\Profiles\XXXXX\datareporting\archived\2020-11. Every time T/B is opened it creates more

Actual results:

The folder gets bigger and bigger every day and I eventually have to manually delete them as they take up too much space

Expected results:

I think these should automatically be deleted after a couple of days or so.

I posted a request for info on the T/B forum but there was no solution after several days.

How much is too much space? I believe that archive is intended and is supposed to be capped at 120MB.

You can disable it with a pref, 'toolkit.telemetry.archive.enabled' set to False.

But unless it is significantly exceeding that 120MB limit it's working as intended.

Thanks for that information about the cap.

Last time I looked I had around 350 files at around 5Kb/file which is much less than the 120Mb you mention.

It is not just the space but I sync my data to several machines and the cloud and these files slow down the data transfer substantially over the network. I appreciate that it might seem trivial but it never seemed to happen before and the effect is noticeable.

I will try that entering Dragon Space and see what happens.

Yes that appears to have solved the problem. Very many thanks for your kind help.

I have also now checked my wife's machine and she seems to have rather a lot of files in "saved-telemetry-pings".

Is there a similar setting to disable these too.

I really thank you for your kind efforts on my behalf.

Sorry Wayne I do not understand if you want me to give you any more info.

Well there isn't any bug here, at this point this is a support request. These files exist because they're part of Telemetry, which is functionality that is inherited from Firefox. I think that fully disabling Telemetry should delete all this data within 30 days, but it's most likely fine to just manually delete it.

In general, we don't support cloud syncing of profile files directly like this and it's entirely possible future projects like maildir or others will create problems for this strategy, so I can't recommend it.

I tried the Thunderbird support forum before posting my original question on here and received no responses.

I have looked at the link you included but it refers only to Firefox and I had already disabled it there. I have also deselected the two options in Thunderbird Options\Data Collection and Use and it does not prevent these files. Is there a more general option in "dragons".

Regards Alan

I would try disabling every pref set to true under toolkit.telemetry in the config editor, but dunno other than that. Possible you can't disable the file saving.
