Tried disabling hardware acceleration in the Thunderbird preferences? Same thing in -safe-mode? (Help | Restart with add-ons disabled)
As an end user, I confirm this bug. Reverted to 78.4.0 and the problem goes away.
In 78.4.1, mouseover unread messages cause the whole line to go blank.

Screenshot?
This doesn't happen in general, so would have to track down what's special for you. Also, can you check -safe-mode per comment 1.

TB now updated to 78.4.2 and same problem occurs.
I have:
- disabled h/w acceleration
Restarted and no change - Disabled all add-ons (only have one).
Restarted and no change - Restarted in safe mode as well as per instruction:
Restarted and no change
I backed it off to 78.3.0 and it is fine.

Windows7? If so, bug 1675970, which will be fixed in 78.4.3
Follow-up to my previous post. I am on Win 7 Classic Theme, and I can confirm that 78.4.3 fixes that blanking issue.
However, now mouse-over the messages does nothing. It does not highlight them. I can live with this, I simply wanted to note the behavior.

By mouse-over you mean doesn't show the tool tip for the message?
If I am reading one in TB 78.4.3 on Windows 10 and move the mouse up or down the Thread pane, I see a tool-tip for the hovered over message and a slight color highlight.
Probably a separate bug report as I think this bug report is a dupe of bug 1675970.
Clarification:
My issue is in fact a dupe of posts in 1675970 in which user "Dan Pernokis" explains the issue in more detail than I did. So this issue has been addressed by him already. Thanks.
