Details
The greatest extension was just discontinued. I think it should be implemented in core Firefox. The one who is browsing the internet should be in charge.
This would add security and privacy.
Once upon time Firefox was the browser of the power user. Maybe it can regain relevance if it serves the user.

Would you volunteer to maintain that additional code for years to come?

It seems like development for uMatrix was indeed paused, however that doesn't mean it's suddenly unavailable or that critical issues won't get patched by the community. It feels like quite a stable product at this point.
Anyway, irrespective of that, I don't think that there's a good reason for us to integrate a universal content blocker like uMatrix. Don't get me wrong, I really like it and it's a great tool, but without sufficient knowledge there's a lot of potential for users to accidentally break websites, not to speak of the maintenance costs and the performance hit on all users, including those who don't have a lot of rules set up (which were the reasons why we removed nsContentBlocker in bug 1357107).
