User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; Win64; x64; rv:82.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/82.0

Steps to reproduce:

Start Thunderbird

Actual results:

  1. When I start Thunderbird the left pane, which contains the list of accounts and mailboxes, often does not display the list of mailboxes. It is often just a blurry semi-transparent window that shows my underlying Windows wallpaper or whichever window happens to be under that portion of the Thunderbird window.

As I move my mouse over the pane the items re-appear. However after opening one or two emails some mailbox names in the list disappear again and I have to move my mouse pointer over them to get them to "re-appear".

  1. If I select two or three or four emails in my Inbox to delete them (using Ctr-click) I notice that all the emails listed below the last Item I select disappear and their names are replaced by white space, or sometimes, semi-transparency. If I swipe my mouse pointer over them they re-appear.

  2. When I am composing a new email of say three or four or five paragraphs I notice that while I am typing in, for example, paragraph three, paragraphs 1 and 2 will suddenly become invisible and be replaced by unfilled background color. However if I left-click on a place where I think that text should be and swipe down with my mouse pointer while holding down the left mouse button, the text appears as inverse highlighted text, as it should do. This shows that the text is still "there" but it is just invisible. If I then release my mouse button, and left-click anywhere in the compose window, the text appears correctly, but after I type a few more words, or hit "Enter" the text in the previous paragraphs suddenly becomes invisible again.

I have included three screen shots showing:

  1. The Thunderbird window with mailboxes replaced by transparency.
  2. The mailbox items when they have re-appeared after I moved my mouse pointer over them, but now the last few email items, and the size of the last email item are invisible, and,
  3. The email items have re-appeared after I moved my mouse pointer over them.
I am guessing that this problem seems to have something to do with screen refreshing not being done properly.
The disappearances of items and their becoming visible again seems to be random. I have not been able to reproduce it predictably.
No other programs display this problem, only Thunderbird, and only since version 78.
I have been using TB for about 15 years.
This issue only began with the release of TB ver 78
My computer is a Lenovo Thinkpad W520 with 8 GB RAM and 500 GB HDD.
OS is Windows 7 Professional running in a 120 GB partition (C:) that has 22.6 GB unused space. My Thunderbird profile is in C:
    Thunderbird is 64-bit version 78.4.3
    .

Expected results:

None of thes disappearances or re-appearances should have occurred.

If you are on 78.4.3 then this should have been fixed by bug 1675970.
What happens if you start Thunderbird in safe mode? Help > restart with addons disabled

going to assume this was bug 1675970 even though we don't have feedback from Michael

Actually I submitted feedback (or I thought I did) on November 19th but I don't see it here.
I must have hit the wrong button and it didn't get saved. My apologies.

Thunderbird is now ver 78.5.1, (64-bit)
The problem is still present.
When I Restart in Safe Mode the problem disappears.

I have one Add-on installed which is ImportExportTools NG.
If I run Thunderbird in Normal mode (not Safe Mode) and disable ImportExportTools NG, the problem is still present.

I hope I am successful in posting my feedback this time.
