These LinkedList<js::ParseTask> leaks look like the happen more frequently for Fission-enabled tests. These leaks reproduced a couple times when running test dom/security/test/csp/test_iframe_sandbox_srcdoc.html in Fission+xorigin mode in bug 1716406.

Steven, this JavaScript Fission memory has increased recently now that we're enabling mochitests with Fission enabled on more platforms. Can someone on your team take a look? This is a pretty high priority. The tree sheriffs say this is the #6 most frequent failure this week.

I will tentatively assign this bug to jonco while he investigates.

To run the tests with Fission, use mach test --enable-fission. Adding --enable-xorigin-tests (to enable Fission "xorigin" test mode, where the mochitest runner loads the test case html in a cross-origin iframe) might help, since about half the failures are from "mochitest-plain-fis-xorig" tests. The other half are mochitest-browser-chrome-fis tests not in xorigin mode.

This is complaining because off-thread parse tasks have not been cleaned up by their creator.

This started happening regularly on 21st April. Looking for changes involving off-thread parsing around that time points to bug 1702278 which landed on the 20th.

I think the problem is that previously we always called FinishOffThreadModule for off-thread parses, whereas now we don't if FillCompileOptionsForRequest fails (I'm not clear on why this would fail though):

So if Jon's hypothesis is correct, then I have a patch that I'm currently attempting to test: Because of the intermittent nature of this problem, verification for this is hard (I'd welcome advice)

My biggest concern is that skimming the logs, the log entry I would expect, if Jon's hypothesis holds, isn't there.

The only way that FillCompileOptionsForRequest fails is if nsIURI::GetSpec fails setting mURL in aRequest->mURI->GetSpec(aRequest->mURL);.

If that failure occurs however, the next line has NS_WARN_IF(NS_FAILURE(rv)), which should show up in the logs. Yet, after checking about half a dozen of the failure logs associated with this bug, I haven't yet seen this happen.

So, while the timeline suggests that my changes broke this, and I've got a patch to fix this, the evidence isn't quite conclusive, which suggests that if we land my proposed patch, it is at best a speculative fix.

Looks like my hunch was wrong. Thanks for trying this.

I found something that's going wrong. When an off-thread parse task completes we call a callback that was supplied when the parse operation was set up. For the script loader this dispatches a runnable to the main thread to finish the parse task and process the result. However, if this happens during shutdown the callback crashes the thread with an assertion failure when dispatching to the main thread. This can be seen in logs, e.g.:

I don't know what this does in release builds exactly. Probably it just doesn't dispatch which is OK, because the JS engine cleans up unfinished parse tasks itself when shutting down. (To me this looks like we're hiding a memory leak here - all these should be cleaned up by the caller, but I guess that's another issue).

I wasn't able to entirely resolve this, but I was able to find the creation point of the task which is leaked

This is ScriptLoader::AttemptAsyncScriptCompile dispatching an off-thread module script compile. I'm not sure of how this is supposed to be collected, so I ran out of ability to track down.

Maybe this is a good starting point for you Jon?

There are parse tasks present when the JS engine is being shut down that have
finished but haven't had their results collected by the embedding. This
shouldn't happen, and I think it's happening here because we're leaking a
JSRuntime (we cancel these when we shut down a runtime).

There's a comment that says this isn't necessary but cancelling outstanding
compile requests in ScriptLoader::Destroy fixes this problem on try. I don't
understand well enough to know what's going wrong with the current approach but
this fixes both the crash and the leak.

I was looking at this as well and had a similar patch to jonco's, by cancelling the tasks in Destroy(). However, that seemed to lead to other module related failures (i.e. https://treeherder.mozilla.org/jobs?repo=try&revision=a46c40ed01afd471383e0d9c81cb54655d9bf4a4) where I guess we still need the requests alive even if we call Destroy? I was thinking of maybe attaching the shutdown observers to each script load request that is created instead of attaching it to the scriptloader, which can maybe satisfy both problems.

Ah right, interesting. I think that's because we didn't expect to see a cancelled request there. We may also need to track more requests so we can cancel them later though.

It's not otherwise obvious that calling this cancels all the requests in the list.
