RESOLVED DUPLICATE of bug 1604906

People

(Reporter: regner, Unassigned)

Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:83.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/83.0

Steps to reproduce:

Marked message as Junk
Junk icon next to message briefly flashed orange
Then message disappeared from Inbox

Actual results:

Message was not in Junk, Trash, Inbox or other folders
Using Edit>Undo Move Message, the message reappears in Inbox with the Junk icon.
Using File>Junk to manually move the message also causes it to disappear.
Rebooting TB and rebooting the computer had no effect on this behavior.

Expected results:

Message should have moved to Junk Folder

Until this began today, messages have always been routinely moved to the Junk folder as they should be, including up to 2 hours before this behavior began today.

Summary: Marking message as Junk causes it to disappear and not appear Junk folder → Marking message as Junk causes it to disappear and not appear in Junk folder

Bob, please check and report your junk settings:
≡ > Account Settings > AffectedAccount > Junk Settings

Also you'll find a link to Global Junk Preferences there.

Thomas: Junk settings are as follows:
Checked: Enable adaptive junk mail controls for this account
Checked: Move new junk messages to Junk folder on <email address>
Global Junk Preferences:
Checked: When I mark Messages as Junk, move them to account's Junk folder
Checked: Enable adaptive junk filter logging

try turning off adaptive junk, restart, and turn it back on. Check tools > developer > error console for info

Thanks Wayne. Turning off adaptive junk logging and restarting did the trick. Marking as Junk now moves to Junk folder, marking as Not Junk moves back to inbox. So I'm back in gear. FYI, these are the errors in the error console:

Wayne: Spoke too soon. Junk processing worked normally the first time tried after unchecking adaptive and rebooting (above). After updating this bug with results, tried again and was back to the original behavior. Adaptive is not checked, but message now disappears again and can be retrieved by Undo Delete Message. Also rebooted but that behavior remained.

What IMAP server are you using?

I would expect this behaviour on say Yahoo which used "bulk mail" for junk mail setting a spam email to a junk status sets a flag on the email to mark it as spam. Yahoo moves it to "Bulk mail" so unless you have that folder subscribed the email effectively disappears.
So the spam folder used by the server and the one specified in Thunderbird must be the same folder. I mention Yahoo because of the totally odd spam folder name used. but it is fairly common to have a junk in Thunderbird and a spam folder on outlook/hotmail.

Matt: I use Earthlink for my ISP and it is POP mail rather than IMAP. Server is pop.ix.netcom.com. While manually marking a message as Junk produces this behavior, periodically TB does flag an incoming message as Junk and places it in the Junk folder with the junk flag. So it appears the issue is associated with processing a manual junk flag beginning with the current or immediately preceding TB Update

Clean up the Junk folder and see if this improves situation. Right click on Junk and select 'Compact'.

Folders are compacted regularly, usually several times during a session but always before shutdown. Compacted the Junk folder with no effect.

I just tried this on a just set-up pop3 account. One message came in, clicked the "flame" thing. It moved to Junk folder of the new pop3 account. Then in Junk folder, clicked the flame and it moved back to Inbox of same pop3 account. Repeated this many times with expected results.

I did have to go the the "global" junk settings first for the "Junk" folder to appear and to enable this movement.

So, would have to say "works for me".

Glad it works for you -- I still have the same issues. Checked Junk and Global junk settings again -- all set correctly and adaptive junk logging is unchecked in both.

No idea why it doesn't work for you. I have adaptive still turned on and it works.
You might try a setting up a new temporary profile and re-setup the account on it and see if the problem still occurs.
The test I did was on a new account and a relatively new profile setup yesterday with one imap account in it.

As this is the same issue, same reporter and mostly the same folk. I am marking this a duplicate of the earlier bug reported.
