In Chimera, when waiting for a webpage, we get a cursor with the normal pointer
and a beachball. However, for those who use Quartz Extreme and those who have
given their cursor a drop shadow...manually...this is not a very good wait
cursor. A drop shadow is a must for Chimera to look fully OS X integreated.
yeah, we have this same problem in mozilla.

I believe this isn't an app specific problem. The wait cursor is a system-wide
thing, so I'd assume it's the systems fault.

This is about the cursor with an arrow and a small beachball badge, not the
system wait cursor.

I don't think any of the cursors in Chimera have the shadows that other
apps have (can't confirm today, as I am on different computer).

Comment 5

I take that back. The arrow has a shadow. The hand cursor does not. Perhaps
there is an API for adding shadows to the non-system cursors.

To get shadowed cursors, you'd likely have to move to the registered cursor APIs
(the "CoreGraphics Scalable Cursor Registry"). Take a look at Jaguar's QuickDraw.h:

QDUnregisterNamedPixMapCursur() [sic]

Bug 208717 shows that Mozilla uses tiff based image in it;s package, so if
wished we could create special cursors with shadows as seen in the standard
apple cursors.
I may just be a stickler for "pretty", but this should be fixed for 1.0. It
seems easy enough and is something that would give us better visual integration
with OS X.

And Jasper's right. We can definitely use those images.

Is there anyone working on this bug?
I was thinking about looking into this, see if I can improve the look of the wait cursor (possibly more OS X looking).
It's assigned to nobody, so have at it :)

Note that on the trunk we share this cursor with other Gecko apps (widget/src/cocoa/cursors/spin1.tiff - spin4.tiff)

Well I've finally done some investigating on this and it seems that it's not all that easy to change at the moment. It seems as though the cursors have been hard coded (not sure that's the right wording) into the widget resource file and cannot be just changed by replacing those four tiff files.
I'll have to see if I can change this somehow.

This is partly related to bug 358159.
This bug has been buried in the graveyard and has not been updated in over 5 years. It is probably safe to assume that it will never be fixed, so resolving as WONTFIX.
