User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.1) Gecko/20020826
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.1) Gecko/20020826

Whether I'm trying to download a file with the "Save Link Target As" or trying
to open an attachment in my e-mail, Mozilla thinks every file has type JPEG,
which makes it very annoying to save / open .doc or .exe files.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Go to this URL: http://www.winmx.com/download/
2. Right click on "CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD" and select "Save Link target as"
3. Notice it asks to save a JPEG, and no other options are given, even though
the file is clearly an .exe file

[Alternately, I'm trying to open a .doc file from my e-mail right now, and it
says, "You have chosen to download a file of type: "JPEG Image" This is not a
JPEG! Argh!]

Actual Results:
The file was saved as type "Application" as expected.

[For the mail "open" attachment for the .doc example, things are much more hairy
as I have to go and select MS Word on my hard drive to open the .doc as Mozilla
thinks it's a JPEG and wants to try to open it itself]

Expected Results:
Mozilla should recognize .exe files as applications, .doc files as Word docs,
and not everything as a JPEG file
Reporter, can you go to Preferences -> Navigator -> Helper Applications and
click on 'Reset' ?
"Reset" didn't seem to do anything in particular. That may be a bit of a bug in
and of itself? not sure.

There is a clue to what's going on in the Helper Applications. I have a File
type "application/octet-stream" that has extension: jpg, mime type:
application/octet-stream and Handled by: mozilla.exe

I'm going to try removing this altogether. I don't know how it got there exactly...

I have removed it now. Now, things seem to work properly. Thanks for the help. I
don't know if this is a "bug" as I'm not sure how that Helper App got in there.
Maybe it was a previous bug that I didn't find in my searches, or maybe it's
strange behaviour due to my disabling of the Download Manager or dialog boxes on
the various types of downloads (selecting to keep window open when download
completes) or maybe just user error. If it recurrs, I'll add onto this. The
behaviour of the "reset" button seems to be kind of strange, or at least not
what I was expecting (did nothing).
More info:
Now all files (.exe, .doc, etc.) appear as type "all files" when tryping to
save, as I have no "helper apps" in the way anymore.

When I try to open the Word doc from my mail, Mozilla correctly prompts me to
open Word to launch the document. That seems good.
this is a mail bug. I had application/octet-stream set for htm => mozilla.

Mail needs a way to let users view application/octet-stream attachments in
navigator as if they have no mime type.

I had the same experience as rob hughes in comments #0-#2.
Comment #2 triggered a vague recollection from earlier in the session.
(this part is hazy)
I think I wanted to view an image. so I rightclicked and selected view image.
I believe the image was a JPEG.
(this is much clearer)
The browser gave me a "what application should I use with this file type" dialog
box. In the subsequent file open dialog, with the directory tree view, I went
to mozilla.exe. I Distinctly remember double checking the path with my shorcut
on the desktop.

I hope this is more than a coincidence.
I agree that this is a mail issue. Now I was opening up an attachment .efx for
an Efax File Viewer program I have. I set the attachment type to Efax, and
Mozilla and mail thinks that everything is an Efax file, as I believe every
attachment to be opened from the e-mail client appears to be of the type
"[application/octet-stream]" so as soon as you set one file type for that, every
file will be of that file type by default. That is not very useful for the user.

The workaround is not to set up any Helper Applications.

I already have an eFax type in Windows. When I go to Explorer, select an .efx
file and get "eFax Document" and opens with "eFax Messenger Plus."

When I try to "open" (right click / Open) an .efx file from the attachment box
in Mozilla Mail, I have to choose the application. Then, when I choose the
application, the display window gets messed upas the path is wrapped 3 times and
the "Advanced... / OK / Cancel" buttons get pushed down.

To me, this is the summary of bugs here:

BUG 1: Mail isn't using Windows file types when opening attachments
BUG 2: All file types opened from mail are seen as Application/Octet-stream,
confusing the issue when a user tries to set file types for any given file
BUG 3: "Downloading xxxxx.yyy" window spawned by the Open dialog doesn't resize
itself when returning from "Choose..."ing a program to open the file with. If
you have a long path, you lose the ability to hit the OK button

Comments welcome from the Mozilla team...
One more confusing detail:

When I Open a Word doc (with no helper apps active for
[application/octet-stream]) from Mozilla Mail's attachment Window it prompts me
to "Open using Word" so it somehow knows it is a word doc.

When I do the same with an .efx file, that I've set a file type and application
for in Windows (recognized by Explorer), Mozilla doesn't know the type.

It's as if Mozilla Mail works with built-in Windows file types, but new types
that the user defines are not recognized properly. I hope all this data helps
out. I had to get it down here for my own sanity as it seemed like everything
was just random in that Open dialog, and then running into the missing OK/Cancel
buttons didn't help (with the sanity, that is).
