User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:78.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/78.0
Steps to reproduce:
Previously I could download, then import .ics files via Events and Tasks > Import.
Since the upgrade from 68 to 78 it doesn't work any longer.
Other users on Reddit report this also:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Thunderbird/comments/jsvzm1/does_ics_import_to_lightning_work_for_others/
Ubuntu 20.10 Thunderbird 78.4
Actual results:
I downloaded the .ics file. From Calendar tab: Events and Tasks > Import. I get the dialog box with the event details and can select the Calendar. If I press the button "Import Event", the dialog closes but the even never appears. If I press the other button "Import all", I get the message:
"An error occurred and the import failed"
Expected results:
ics calendar file should have imported into the Lightning calendar.

wfm on Win10, 78.5.1 (64-bit), with an event first exported from TB.
Apollo, where does the ics get created? Can you please provide a testcase.icl which fails (replace private data in text editor) and attach to this bug?

Apollo, please provide more detailed steps to reproduce - every action matters.
Here is an example of an .ics file that does not import and throws up the error message.

Hi Thomas,
I've uploaded a lightly anonymised calendar.ics file (only email addresses and name of event changed).
Also screenshots of import and fail windows.
This comes as an attachment to my TB 78 email from my employer (>20,000 person state organization). I save to my Downloads folder. Then I try and import it to Lightning which fails as described. It worked prior to upgrading from TB 68 to 78.
I can import this on Android, syncs to Nextcloud then to Lightning (suggesting that the .ics file is OK)
Same issue on both Ubuntu 20.04 and 20.10
I hope this helps.
Thanks!

This is the failure message after clicking "import all"

- Selecting Import All triggers the failure message (other screenshot)
- Selecting Import Event closes this window, but the event does not appear in the calendar

Could be a duplicate of bug 1652984.

Thank you appollo11 for providing all the information.
I used "send later" to mimick sending as attachment, then downloaded the attachment (calendar.ics) from TB into an OS folder, then Events & Tasks > Import.
Imports without any problems for me on Win10, TB 78.5.1 (64-bit), into a local calendar.
Note that your version of Thunderbird is not fully up to date.
Are you using our official Linux downloads from thunderbird.net?

I am importing into the default Personal calendar. I have also tried other calendars that I set up and use daily, but same result. Either doesn't appear or gives fail message.
I have also run TB with in safe mode with all extensions disabled - same result.
Additionally, potentially related, in TB 68 and earlier I used to be able to drag the .ics file from the mail to the Today Pane and it would insert into the calendar as an alternative to Save, then Import (main bug). This is broken also - a calendar entry dialog opens with the time and date right now, but it is devoid of the information in the .ics file.

Since updating, this bug seems fixed on Ubuntu + Thunderbird. The .ics file above imports fine.
