My apologies if this has been filed before, I did do a search and scan for potential duplicate reports. If I set in Prefs > Mail & Newsgroups > Addressing: [unticked] incoming mail messages [unticked] outgoing mail messages [ticked] limit to [700] cards I still get incoming mails' from addresses put into the collected cards section of the address book. Ticking the 'outgoing mail messages' box results in the same behaviour [incoming also getting filed]. The option seems to be getting set, as it gets remembered when I go back into the relevant subsection of Prefs.

Quick addition to this as it's probably the result from the same problem - If I click on any mail in any of my inboxes (even though they have already arrived, days old, for example), the from email addresses get added into the collected addresses section of the address book.

Mike, which version do you use? The options you mention do not exist in my Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.2b) Gecko/2002100214. pi

Could you have a look at a newer version, like 1.2a or a nightly? pi

Just upgraded to 1.2a (Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.2a) Gecko/20020910) and the options are still there, under: Edit menu> Preferences > Mail & Newsgroups > Addressing > Email Address Collection.

Probably there were removed later in bug 157186 or bug 169020. Please have a look at your prefs.js, what does it say for mail.collect_email_address_incoming? The *new* default (i.e., it won't work for you) is that they are not collected and this WFM. I hate it since I was never asked to change this setting. But anyways. pi

I didn't have anything like 'mail.collect_email_address_incoming' in my prefs.js file - in Mozilla Prefs that option is unticked. The outgoing option seems to be ticked, but no entry in prefs.js. If I tick it [incoming option], then the entry is entered, with the value 'true'. If I untick the outgoing option, there is still no respective entry in prefs.js. If I tick it again, still no change in prefs.js. Should I delete and recreate my profile? I don't have much in it at the moment.

Thanks for your work. I don't think you should spend to much time one it since there is obviously some major change introduced recently. The only thing you might try is to set mail.collect_email_address_incoming to false (while Mozilla is not running, of course), now that it was created when you chose this option. pi

Since the option was removed (I have no clue why). I mark this bug INVALID. If you have still a problem with setting it in user.js, please open a new bug. pi

One thing I'd like to note here is this - how do Mozilla users know when they should be ditching their profiles and recreating new ones when updating to a newer version of Mozilla? I think there needs to be a fairly obvious note somewhere, as it may help cut down the amount of bug report submissions due to old/incorrect prefs/user.js settings causing problems. Maybe an 'import' (repair profile, or something?) option set up to weed out these invalid settings?
