User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:83.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/83.0

Steps to reproduce:

I have 3 sets of tabs open.
Each set contains

  • 1 gmail tab
  • 1 bitbucket tab
  • 1 aws console tab (login page)

A few additional tabs of normal websites which are not doing anything fancy.

All windows are not in focus; in other virtual desktop etc.

Spec:
Ryzen 3950x
64GB RAM
GTX 980Ti (6GB VRAM)

Please let me know what reports I can submit for analysis.

Actual results:

Extremely high VRAM usage to the point other applications have issues (such as games not loading texture). Firefox alone eats up 2.5GB+ VRAM.

Expected results:

Firefox should not use such high amount of VRAM; esp not when in use/focus.
It should free VRAM for other programs as they need it.

Having even 50 tabs on Chrome/Edge would not come this close to VRAM usage.

Bugbug thinks this bug should belong to this component, but please revert this change in case of error.

Component: Untriaged → Tabbed Browser

This is the VRAM usage for a fresh firefox and chrome started with each:
4 Gmail tabs
4 Bitbucket tabs
4 AWS Console tabs
3 JIRA tabs
and this bugzilla page.

Chrome using 500MB VRAM. Firefox is already at 1GB+ VRAM. This same thing will shoot above 2GB with time while chrome will mostly stay same.

Component: Tabbed Browser → PDF Viewer
OS: Unspecified → Windows 10

Summary: Very High VRAM Usage from Simple/Couple of Tabs [v83] → Very High VRAM Usage from PDF Viewing [v83]

Please disregard my previous comments. I have been able to reliably reproduce the issue.

I opened firefox. VRAM usage ~200MB.
I opened a PDF. VRAM usage ~500MB.
Started scrolling. VRAM usage shot up to 3GB.

This is a simple 1.5MB 136 pages PDF with text (some API documentation).

I am attaching a video of the memory usage. Video link: https://1drv.ms/v/s!AqOg7ryXYoculdBvW3_LNBedSpURpg?e=dN0OTO

At first, a firefox window started with just this bug page. ~230MB VRAM.

Around 00:09, PDF opened. VRAM jumped to ~350MB.

Then I started scrolling the PDF (out of video area) from top to bottom, bottom to top and repeat. VRAM usage keeps going up and up. I stopped the recording and closed firefox completely when it reached 10GB fearing system crash.

:riasat, could attach the pdf file ?

Hi.

Unfortunately, I can not share the file publicly. How do I provide a private file only for Mozilla employee? Send a private email?

In the meantime, I will try to repro with another PDF if possible.

Can you still reproduce? If so, you could email it to the triage owner, bdahl, identified at the top of the bug page.
